South Carolina Stingrays News Release
North Charleston, SC - Todd Ford stopped 37 of 40 shots, but the South Carolina Stingrays fell to the Charlotte Checkers 3-1 in front of 4,445 at North Charleston Coliseum Saturday night.
Matt Scherer started the scoring 25 seconds into the game beating Checkers goalie Ryan Munce with a blast from the near point. Nate Kiser and Dain Prewitt assisted on the play. For Prewitt, the assist is his first professional point. Charlotte controlled the play the rest of the period and eventually tied the score as Aaron Slattengren tucked a shot between Stingrays goaltender Todd Ford's legs. Michel Leveille and Matthew Ford helped on the play. After one period of play, Charlotte led South Carolina in shots 20 to four.
The Checkers continued their tough play into the second period as Tyler Doig netted his first goal of the season with help from Julien Brouillette and Ryan Garlock at 7:44. The Stingrays retaliated with numerous opportunities the rest of the period, but could never solve Munce.
The Stingrays received multiple power-play chances to tie the game in the third period including a rare 6-on-3 advantage, but Charlotte added an insurance goal at 13:34 from defenseman Ethan Graham with help from Doig and Leveille. South Carolina finished the night 0-for-10 on the power play. The Checkers finished 1-for-5. Munce exited the game due to injury after stopping a quick Stingrays rush and was replaced by Billy Sauer. Munce stopped 22 of 23 shots and eventually earned the win. Sauer stopped all nine Stingrays shots in 11:30 of play.
The Stingrays return to the ice Tuesday when they battle the Gwinnett Gladiators at 7:05 p.m. Tuesday night is Seniors Night at North Charleston Coliseum. All senior citizens 60 and over, senior students in college and seniors in high school will get a FREE ticket to the game with proof of I.D.
