Victoria Salmon Kings News Release
Anchorage, AK - The Victoria Salmon Kings and Alaska Aces met to kick off their 2009-10 regular season schedules. The Salmon Kings started John Murray in net and the Aces countered with Sebastian Dahm.
A fast paced first period saw both teams get several chances. The Aces broke the scoreless tie while shorthanded. The Kings chased the puck into the right wing corner and Aces' Captain Scott Burt found rookie Chris Morehouse all alone out in front. Morehouse spun and beat Murray over his blocker shoulder for the 1-0 Aces lead. That's how the first period would end.
The Salmon Kings bounced back in the second outshooting the Aces 15-9. Alaska's John Lammers burst down the right side and was hit with a pass by Colin Hemingway. Lammers' one-timer rang off the post and the Kings' Dirk Southern picked it up and went the other way. Southern skated into the Aces' zone down the right side and found Wes Goldie in the slot. Goldie avoided the crossbar and buried his first of the season on the one-timer. The teams headed to the locker room 1-1 through 40 minutes.
The third period boasted more fast-paced play as both teams were awarded with numerous odd-man rushes. Both Murray and Dahm stood tall in the period, stopping 10 and nine shots respectively. The Aces would tally their second goal, and the game-winner, with just under a minute left when rookie Jack Combs was credited with the Aces' marker off a goalmouth scramble at 19:03. Aces 2 Salmon Kings 1.
Both the Salmon Kings and Aces both finished 0/6 0.00% on the powerplay. The Salmon Kings outshot the Aces 31-30.
The Salmon Kings and Aces meet tomorrow night at 8:15 p.m. PT in Alaska. The teams wrap up the three-game set on Monday at 8:15 p.m. PT. The Kings then welcome the Bakersfield Condors to the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre for their home opener on Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m. PT.
