Chiefs fall in season opener

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. - The Johnstown Chiefs opened up their regular season on Saturday night with a 2-0 loss to the Cincinnati Cyclones at the Cambria County War Memorial Arena

After a scoreless first period, Cincinnati's Doug Krantz put in a shorthanded goal against Kris Mayotte for the first goal of the game at 17:37 of the second period. Barrett Ehgoetz and alternate captain Scott Reynolds got the assists on the play. The Chiefs were unable to take advantage of four power plays throughout the second period.

At 6:41 of the third Doug Krantz was called for a delay of game putting the Chiefs on a power play. Shortly after while shorthanded, Chris Mueller shot up through the middle firing in another shorthanded goal against Mayotte to put the Cyclones up 2-0 at 6:53.

The Chiefs continued to put pressure on Cincinnati looking to put one past Jeremy Smith, pulling goalie Mayotte while on a power play with 2 minutes left to gain a 2 skater advantage but were unable to score. Jeremy Smith got the shut out with 22 saves for Cincinnati.

Kris Mayotte stopped 24 of 26 shots in the loss to Cincinnati. The Chiefs were unable to capitalize on eight power play advantages.
