Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

MYRTLE BEACH SC, - The Myrtle Beach Pelicans, Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Texas Rangers, let go a mid-game lead Tuesday, dropping the opener of a three game series with the Lynchburg Hillcats, 3-2, at TicketReturn.com Field at Pelicans Ballpark.

The Pelicans jumped out to the first lead of the game, scoring off Lynchburg starter Dimasther Delgado in the bottom of the fifth. Vinny DiFazio led off the inning with a double down the leftfield line. He later scored on a sacrifice fly from Santiago Chirino. It was 1-0.

Lynchburg battled back to score two runs in the second, chasing Myrtle Beach starter Wilmer Font after a season high five and a third innings. Font did not allow a hit in the first five innings. He wound up allowing only two hits and just one of the two runs off him was earned. Font struck out seven, equaling a season high. The Hillcats led 2-1 at that point.

The Lynchburg lead was short lived, however, with the Pelicans rallying for another run in the bottom of the sixth. Christian Villanueva doubled with one out in the sixth ahead of an RBI single up the origin by first baseman Brett Nicholas.

That tie lasted as long as the first Lynchburg lead. The Hillcats struck back with a solo homerun by Chris Garcia in the seventh. It was his third, and the first allowed by pitcher Joe Van Meter this season.

Back to .500 on the season, the Pelicans (21-21) host the Hillcats again at 7:05pm Wednesday. Cody Buckel throws against righty JR Graham for Lynchburg. For tickets call the Pelicans at 843-918-6000 or visit MyrtleBeachPelicans.com, powered by TicketReturn.
