SALEM, VA (May 22, 2012) - A battle for first place in the Southern Division went the way of the home team as the Dash fell 3-1 to Salem in their first game at LewisGale Field this season.
Salem (24-17) plated two runs in the seventh to grab the lead for good. Michael Almanzar led off the inning with a double and reached third before scoring on an infield ground ball. Leadoff man Jackie Bradley Jr. drew a two-out walk, and Sean Coyle followed with a triple off the left field wall to give the Red Sox a 3-1 lead.
Winston-Salem (24-18) tallied the first run of the game in the third. Nick Ciolli led off the inning with a walk, Jake Oester singled and the Dash had two runners in scoring position after a Daniel Wagner sacrifice bunt. Carlos Sanchez lifted a fly ball to center field that was deep enough to score Ciolli for the 1-0 lead.
The Red Sox threatened in the bottom of the frame, advancing the leadoff man to third with no outs before Jon Bachanov induced a double play from Bradley Jr. and then struck out Coyle to end the inning.
Salem did break through in the fourth to tie the game. Travis Shaw ripped a double down the right field line to lead off the inning. With one out, Christian Vazquez slapped a ball into left-center to tie the game 1-1.
The Red Sox bullpen was perfect in three innings of work. Closer Mike Olmsted entered in the ninth to finish off his league-leading 10th save of the season.
A morning start greets the Dash in game two of the series against Salem. Right-hander Ryan Buch (2-4, 5.15 ERA) gets the start for Winston-Salem. The Red Sox counter with righty Ryan Pressly (3-1, 5.95 ERA). First pitch is slated for 11:00 a.m.
