Florida Takes A Bite Out of Cyclones, 5-0
February 11, 2009 - ECHL (ECHL)
Cincinnati Cyclones News Release
ESTERO, Florida - The leaders of the North and South Divisions of the ECHL met on Wednesday night and Florida defeated the Cincinnati Cyclones, 5-0. Anton Khudobin stopped all 22 shots for his fourth shutout of the year. It was the fourth straight road game for Cincinnati, which is 2-2 on the trip south.
The Cyclones played the game two players short as American Hockey League (AHL) recalls pulled two defensemen out of the lineup early in the week. Florida's lineup, which featured seven NHL draft picks and eight players who have appeared in an ECHL All-Star Game-fired both barrels on Cincinnati goaltenders.
There was no scoring in the first period, as Florida outshot Cincinnati, 12-6. Each team had three power play chances in the opening 20 minutes.
Florida, the most prolific scoring team in the second period in the ECHL this season, exploded for four middle frame goals. Noah Babin scored his first of the year as did Brad Zanon, while Kevin Baker set a club record with his 41st score of the year. Ross Carlson also added his eleventh goal of the season. Ryan Nie who was 9-0 as a Cyclone prior to the game absorbed the loss and left the game after the fourth score.
The Everblades would add another score in the third period from Peter Metcalf at 10:43 to close out the scoring. The shots were even at eight apiece in the period and for the game, Florida outshot Cincinnati, 31-22.
Despite the loss, the Cyclones remain the leaders of the North Division-one point ahead of Elmira.
The Cyclones are now 27-18-5 on the season, while Florida is 34-12-2. The Cyclones play at Florida to open a three game set against the Everblades on Wednesday night. The game will be carried on MAX FM (97.7 and 99.5) with the pregame show at 7:15pm and the faceoff at 7:30pm.
