Rochester Americans News Release
(Rochester, NY)... Rochester Americans Vice President of Hockey Operations Ted Nolan announced today that the Florida Panthers have reassigned defenseman Clay Wilson and goaltender Jacob Markstrom to the Amerks. In an unrelated move, the Amerks also released forward Bates Battaglia and defenseman Brian O'Hanley from their 25-game professional tryouts.
Wilson, 27, returns to Rochester after appearing in two games with the Panthers following his promotion to the big club on January 21st. The Sturgeon Lake, Minnesota, native currently ranks third on the team and ninth among American Hockey League blueliners in scoring with 28 points (8+20) in 44 games. A 2011 AHL All-Star, Wilson has skated in 18 career NHL games for Columbus (2007-08), Atlanta (2008-09) and Florida (2009-11), scoring one goal with two assists and four penalty minutes.
Markstrom comes back to the Amerks after making his NHL debut in a very brief one-day stint with the Panthers. Recalled early Sunday morning to back-up Scott Clemmensen, Markstrom entered the contest before the start of the second period and finished the game with 12 saves and two goals against as Florida dropped a 5-2 decision to the New Jersey Devils. In 33 American Hockey League with Rochester this season, the Gavle, Sweden, native has posted a 13-9-1 record and one shutout to go along with a 3.14 goals-against average and a .902 save percentage.
Battaglia leaves the Amerks after scoring one goal and two assists in 20 games in the red, white and blue. A veteran of 580 NHL games, Battaglia joined the Amerks on December 8th, scored his first goal as an Amerk three days later and skated in his 900th professional game against Toronto on December 18th.
O'Hanley, 26, returns to the ECHL's Cincinnati Cyclones after registering one goal in two games with Rochester over the weekend. He joined the Amerks on Friday evening and made his AHL debut that night in Rochester's 2-1 overtime loss to the Lake Erie Monsters.
The Quincy, Massachusetts, native is currently in his third season with Cincinnati, where he has six goals and 17 assists for 23 points in 38 games. At the time of his recall, he led all team defensemen and was seventh among ECHL rearguards in scoring. Originally a ninth-round pick (267th overall) of the San Jose Sharks in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft, the 5-foot-11, 191-pound forward played under current Amerks head coach Chuck Weber the previous two seasons, helping Cincinnati to its second Kelly Cup championship in three years in 2010.
Rochester returns home on Wednesday, January 26th as it welcomes back former Amerk Jamie Johnson and the Grand Rapids Griffins to The Blue Cross Arena. The 7:05 p.m. North Division showdown will be the second of six meetings between the two teams this season and will be broadcast live on SportsRadio 1280 WHTK and FM 107.3, Rochester's Sports Talk. The game will also be televised live on Time Warner Cable SportsNet Channel 26.
