Phantoms Introduce New School Program with Unveiling of New Mascot

The Adirondack Phantoms, proud American Hockey League affiliate of the NHL's Philadelphia Flyers, announced this past week the introduction of their new school assembly program -GOAL! Get Out and Live.

The Phantoms new team mascot will debut the GOAL! Program on Thursday, January 27 at 2:00 p.m. during a school assembly of nearly 400 students at Ballard Elementary School in Wilton, NY.

The GOAL program is designed to demonstrate a more active lifestyle for children, and encourages healthy dietary habits. GOAL is based on Michelle Obama's Let's Move initiative, and developed by local principals, physical educators and school nutritionists in conjunction with New York State public health and education objectives.

GOAL is built on a five-point program:

1. Eat a healthy breakfast

2. Eat a variety of fruits and vegetables

3. Drink lots of water

4. Be active for 60 minutes each day

5. Limit "screen time" to two hours a day

The new mascot will be unveiled to local hockey fans on Friday, January 28before the Phantoms 7:30 p.m. home game versus the Charlotte Checkers.

The GOAL program is available to all local schools upon request by calling the Phantoms' Director of Fun & Community Development, Andrew Hill at 518-480-3355.

Wednesday, January 26 - 7:00 p.m. - Glens Falls Civic Center - Glens Falls, NY

vs. Binghamton Senators (23-18-2-3, 51 pts)

5th Place in Eastern Division, Eastern Conference

This will be the fourth of eight meetings between the Phantoms and Senators and will be the first of four times that the Ottawa Senators AHL affiliate comes to Glens Falls this season. Binghamton currently leads the season series 3-0 and have outscored the Phantoms 19-5 in those games. Rookie Bobby Butler leads the team in goals (19) while Corey Locke has a league high (43) assists and (58) points in 40 games. In 30 games, goaltender Barry Brust is 16-12-1-1 with a 2.63 GAA and .923 save percentage. He is 2-0-0 against Adirondack this season stopping 76 of the 80 shots he has faced. Binghamton is ranked 3rd in the AHL on the power play (22.5%) and 19th on the penalty kill (81.4%). The Senators are 7-2-0-1 in their last 10 games and are currently on a 4-game point streak.

Friday, January 28 - 7:30 p.m. - Glens Falls Civic Center - Glens Falls, NY

vs. Charlotte Checkers (25-16-1-4, 55 pts)

Tied-3rd Place in Eastern Division, Eastern Conference

This will be the fourth of six meetings between the Phantoms and Checkers. It will be the second time that Charlotte has visited the Glens Falls Civic Center. The last time the Checkers came to Glens Falls was back on October 22 in a 5-1 victory over Adirondack. Ex-Adirondack Phantom Jon Matsumoto has 12 goals and 29 points in 31 games with the Checkers as he has also spent time up in the NHL with the Carolina Hurricanes. Jerome Samson leads the team in goals(21) and points (43) while Oskars Osala, the ex-Hershey Bear, has 27 assists and 39 points in 46 games. Justin Pogge is 14-9-2 with a 2.96 GAA in 28 games while Mike Murphy is 11-8-2 with a 3.04 GAA and .903 save percentage in 23 games as they continue to split time in goal. The Checkers are 10-0-0-0 when leading after 2 periods and 1-5-1-0 when trailing after the second. Charlotte is ranked 6th in the AHL on the power play (21.1%) and 5th in the league on the penalty kill (86.0%).

Saturday, January 29 - 7:30 p.m. - War Memorial at Oncenter - Syracuse, NY

@ Syracuse Crunch (16-24-1-4, 37 pts)

Tied-6th Place in Eastern Division, Eastern Conference

This will be the fifth of eight meetings between the Phantoms and Crunch this season. Adirondack currently leads the season series 4-0 outscoring Syracuse 15-6 in the 4 games. This will be the last time Adirondack travels to Western New York to play the Anaheim Ducks AHL affiliate this season. The Crunch make their second trip to Glens Falls on February 4 and first since October 15. Ex-Phantom, Patrick Maroon, and Kyle Palmieri have a team high 10 goals while Nicolas Deschamps has 22 points in 45 games with the Crunch. Goaltender J.P. Levasseur 6-13-0-3 with a 2.83 GAA and .923 save percentage. He is 0-4-0 against Adirondack this season with a 3.25 GAA

and .889 save percentage. Syracuse is ranked 15th in the AHL on the power play (17.5%) and 22nd on the penalty kill (80.6%). Syracuse is 3-6-0-1 in their last 10 games and have struggled on the road this season as they are 8-15-0-2.

Week 15 Game Results

January 21, 2011 - Wilkes-Barre/Scranton 2 @ Adirondack 4 (In Philadelphia)

Michael Ryan's goal of the season with 1:30 remaining was the game-winner as Adirondack defeated Wilkes-Barre at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia. On an Erik Gustafsson shot from the point, Ryan was able to re-direct one past Penguins goaltender John Curry to score his 10th of the year. Leighton was stellar making 38 saves including one in the final minutes of the game to preserve the victory. It marked the first time Leighton played at the Wells Fargo Center where he helped the Flyers come within games of winning the Stanley Cup. Eric Wellwood (9th) tied the game at 1 on a rebound shot from the right wing circle to score his first goal since December 29 vs. Manchester. Greg Moore (6th) gave Adirondack a 2-1 lead blistering a one-timer past Curry to score the Phantoms sixth short-handed goal of the season. 9 minutes later, Kevin Veilluex tied the game at 2-2 on a shot from the high-slot that beat goaltender Michael Leighton top-shelf. The game remand tied until Michael Ryan's heroics yet again. Denis Hamel (13th) sealed the victory for Adirondack as he slid one into the empty net. Adirondack went 0-for-5 on the power play while Wilkes-Barre went 0-for-6.

January 22, 2011 - Hamilton 4 @ Adirondack 3 (SO)

Ben Maxwell opened the scoring for Hamilton in the first period as Alexander Avtsin fed Maxwell in the high-slot, beating Phantoms goaltender Johan Backlund to score his ninth goal of the season. Stefan Legein tied the score at 1-1 on a breakaway pass from Kevin Marshall in the Phantoms defensive end. It was Legein's fourth of the year. J.P. Testwuide scored his first goal of the year at the 11:12 mark of the second period as he re-directed a Cullen Eddy shot from the point to give Adirondack the 2-1 lead. Minutes later, Eric Wellwood extended the lead to 3-1 as he backhanded a Mike Testwuide pass from the right wing circle past Mayer to score his second goal in his last two games. First place Hamilton though struck with two goals in 1:27 in the third period. Kyle Klubertanz scored his sixth goal of the year at the 13:39 mark and then Hunter Bishop tied the game at 3 on his second goal of the season. Each team had opportunities in the overtime but the game went into a shootout where Aaron Paluhaj and Dustin Boyd scored for Hamilton to seal the game for the Bulldogs. Michael Ryan, Greg Moore, Denis Hamel and Luke Pither were denied by Bulldogs goaltender Robert Mayer as he earned his eighth win of the season. Johan Backlund made 26 saves in regulation and neither team was provided with a man advantage as referee Jeff Smith did not call one penalty throughout the whole game.

January 23, 2011 - Adirondack 1 @ Syracuse 5

Michael Ryan (11th) scored the lone goal for the Phantoms as Adirondack finished the 3-game weekend earning 3 out of a possible 6 points. Michael Leighton stopped 17 saves in defeat while counterpart Dany Sabourin made 19 saves to earn his third win of the weekend. Bouchard (6th), Wellar (3rd), Gordon (20th), Souray (2nd) and Willsie (17th) scored for Hershey. Adirondack and Hershey both went 1-for-4 on the power play while the Phantoms were outshot 22-20 in the game.

-Michael Ryan has 8 goals and 1 assist in the last 11 games

-Michael Leighton won his first game since being assigned to Adirondack on January 4. On Friday night in Philadelphia, Leighton made 38 saves in a 4-2 victory over Wilkes-Barre. It marked the first time Leighton played at the Wells Fargo Center since the Flyers run in the 2010 Stanley Cup Playoffs.

-J.P. Testwuide scored his first goal as an Adirondack Phantom on Saturday night against Hamilton. It was his first goal since he scored on January 16th last season with the Houston Aeros.

-Adirondack is 9-5-3 since December 17 and 7-5-3 under Head Coach Joe Paterson

The Boston, MA native scored the game-winning goal with 1:30 left on Friday night at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia leading Adirondack to a 4-2 victory over Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. In the last 11 games, Ryan has tallied 8 goals and 1 assist. Since signing with Adirondack back on November 23, Ryan has 11 goals and 3 assists in 21 games.
