JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Jacksonville Suns right-handed starting pitcher Kendry Flores has been named the Southern League Pitcher of the Week for May 4-10, announced by the league office on Monday.
During his two starts during the week, Flores went 1-0 with a 0.64 ERA in a league-high 14 innings pitched. During that time on the mound Flores struck out 12 batters compared to only two walks, and gave up only one earned run on six hits.
On May 4 he pitched eight scoreless innings against Chattanooga where he only allowed one hit and faced one batter over the minimum in addition to his five strikeouts. Flores did not receive any run support in the contest as the Lookouts won 2-0 on a two-run walkoff home run by Byron Buxton off the Suns bullpen in the bottom of the ninth.
His last start on May 9 at Mobile he earned his first win of the season by pitching six innings where he allowed only a run on five hits against the BayBears. He also struck out seven batters compared to two walks as the Suns won their rubber match against Mobile 8-2.
Overall this season, Flores is 1-3 with a 2.64 ERA in five starts on the mound for Jacksonville. In his 30 and two-thirds innings pitched he has struck out 22 batters compared to eight walks.
This is the first season for the Azua, Dominican Republic native in the Marlins organization. He was acquired by the Marlins as part of the trade that sent third baseman Casey McGehee to San Francisco last December, and he is a member of the Marlins 40-man roster.
This is the first weekly pitcher of the week award for Flores in his career, and the first for a Sun in 2015. Previously Sean Donatello was named the April 2015 BC Powder Relief Pitcher of the Month by the Southern League.
The Suns are underway in the first game of their five-game series with the Pensacola Blue Wahoos at Bragan Field. The series will last through Friday, with Tuesday's 7:05 p.m. game featuring 50-cent family feast night with hot dogs, peanuts, and ice cream available for only 50 cents, and there are also buy-one-get-one tickets available with a receipt from any GATE convenience store.
The 2015 season of Suns baseball is presented by EverBank, the official banking partner of the Jacksonville Suns. Sponsorships, group outings, and season/individual game tickets are currently available by calling the Suns front office at (904) 358-2846.
