Southern League Names Pitcher and Player of the Week for May 4th-10th
May 11, 2015 - Southern League (SL1) News Release
MARIETTA, GA - The Southern League of Professional Baseball Clubs announces its Pitcher and Player of the Week for May 4 through May 10. Righthander Kendry Flores of the Jacksonville Suns was selected as the Pitcher of the Week while Jackson Generals middle infielder Tyler Smith earned Player of the Week honors.
Over a league-high 14 innings, Flores struck out 12 batters (tied for second most), while allowing just six hits and issuing two walks. The Azua, Dominican Republic native posted a league-low 0.57 WHIP and held opposing hitters to a meager .136 batting average. Among pitchers who tossed 10 innings or more, the righty also led the circuit with a 0.64 ERA. On May 4 at Chattanooga, Flores began his week with eight dominant innings of one-hit baseball, surrendering no runs while fanning five. He carried that momentum into the Suns 8-2 win at Mobile on May 9. After giving up a lone run in the first, Flores settled in over the next five shutout frames to finish with seven strikeouts in six innings. Signed by San Francisco in June of 2009 and sent to Miami in a trade in December of 2014, this is Flores' first career Player of the Week award.
In six games last week, Jackson Generals SS/2B Tyler Smith recorded a .455 batting average with six runs, 10 hits, five extra-base hits, 17 total bases, four doubles, a homerun, five RBI and five walks. The Thousand Oaks, California native led the loop in doubles and tied for the lead in extra-base hits and total bases, while his batting average, runs, hits and walks were all good for top-five numbers. Furthermore, Smith paced the Southern League with a .773 slugging percentage and an OPS of 1.344. Hitting safely in all six games, his best performance of the week came in the Generals 15-4 win at home over Pensacola on May 4. The Oregon State product went 3-for-3 at the dish with a run, two doubles, a walk and a pair of RBI. Selected by Seattle in the 8th round of the 2013 draft, this is Smith's first career Player of the Week award, although he earned the 2013 Appalachian League Player of the Year.
