Florence Blows out Washington to Win Series

July 6, 2014 - Frontier League (FL)
Florence Y'alls News Release

(Florence, KY) - The Florence Freedom (20-23) scored six runs in the seventh inning to run away from the Washington Wild Things (28-17) by a final score of 12-3 Sunday night at UC Health Stadium.

The Freedom's 12 runs were the most runs they've scored in one game this season and their 13 hits matched their season high in that category. Every player in the Freedom's lineup had a hit or a RBI. The game featured two inside-the-park home runs, one by Washington and one by Florence.

Florence wasted no time getting on the board in the first inning against Washington starter Zach LeBarron (0-2). Cole Miles tripled to dead center field and Zak Blair drove him home with a sacrifice fly. Washington would tie it though in the top of the second against Peter Gehle (3-2) as Carter Bell hit an inside-the-park home run to center field. Miles was hurt on the play. He finished the inning but was removed from the game and replaced by Orrin Sears afterwards.

With the game tied at one, Ben Kline doubled to lead off the second inning. One out later Rob Kelly singled him home to put the Freedom ahead for good.

In the third inning Sears got things started with a double of his own. Sam Eberle drove him home with a single and it was 3-1 in favor of Florence. Stewart Ijames drove in a run for Washington in the fourth to cut Florence's lead to 3-2 but the Freedom struck back in a big way in the bottom of the fourth.

Joe Staley walked to start the inning and Kelly launched his fifth home run of the season to make it 5-2 Florence.

The game got a little tighter in the top of the seventh as Washington played a run on a Connor Lewis RBI grounder.

But in the bottom of the seventh, the Freedom offense broke through. Adam Taylor doubled and Michael Wilson bunted his way to first to put runners at the corners with nobody out. One out later Blair drew a walk to load the bases. Then Eberle delivered his second RBI single of the game and it was 6-3 in favor of the Freedom. Ryan Solberg followed with a two-RBI single to make it 8-3. With two away, Staley clobbered his team-leading sixth home run of the season to break the game wide open as the Freedom took an 11-3 lead.

In the eighth, Wilson got the crowd excited with an inside-the-park home run on a perfectly placed ball to left that got past the diving C.J. Beatty and rolled all the way to the wall. Wilson beat the throw home with a head-first dive.

Gehle worked six and two thirds innings, scattering seven hits and giving up three runs while striking out three and walking one for the victory. Daniel DeSimone and Adam Krebs finished the game off for Florence.

With the win the Freedom improve to 5-1 against the first-place Wild Things on the season and creep back to within seven games of the division lead.

They get two off days before welcoming the Frontier Greys to town on Wednesday for a double header. First pitch of game one is set for 5:35 p.m. eastern time.
