Normal CornBelters News Release
Schaumburg, Ill. - The Normal CornBelters, presented by Illinois Corn Farmers, gave up two big innings early in the game as the Schaumburg Boomers completed a series sweep with a 9-3 decision on Sunday afternoon at Boomers Stadium.
The Boomers struck first in the second inning with four unearned runs when a walk and an error put runners on first and second, followed by two strikeouts and bases-clearing triple to the right field wall by Alexi Colon. A Justin Vasquez single and a Mark Nelson double plated two more runs to give the hosts a 4-0 lead.
Schaumburg batted around for the second consecutive inning in the third and added three runs as Brian McConkey and Ryan McChesney hit doubles to increase the advantage to 5-0, followed by a bloop double just inside the left field line by Vasquez to send two more home for a 7-0 lead.
The CornBelters broke onto the board in the fifth with a lead-off single by Aaron Dudley, who scored from first on a double to the left field corner by Roman Hernandez.
The Boomers extended the score to 9-1 in the sixth inning on a two-run homer just over the left field wall by Brian McConkey, scoring Tyler Sciacca after he was hit by a pitch.
The Belters scored in the seventh in similar fashion to their first run as Hernandez doubled home Dudley, who reached via lead-off walk, followed by a Santiago Chirino single to left center to score Hernandez to cut the deficit to 9-3.
Danny Jimenez (3-3) earned the win with a six-inning outing, giving up one run on five hits with two walks and seven strikeouts. Belters starter Bobby Shore (3-2) took the loss with three innings of work, giving up seven runs (three earned) on five hits, five walks and five strikeouts.
