Last time out...
The Florence Freedom (19-23) dug themselves an early hole and could not recover in a 6-4 loss to the Washington Wild Things (28-16) Saturday night. Florence got on the board first with three straight hits off Washington starter Zac Fuesser (4-1) in the first inning. Sam Eberle ripped a single up the middle to drive in Cole Miles. Florence did not score again until the ninth as the Wild Things took command of the game in the third inning. A passed ball scored Daniel Poma and Stewart Ijames lined a single to left to drive in Scott Kalamar putting Washington ahead 2-1. A Ben Kline throwing error allowed another run to score for the Wild Things. Two errors on one play by Michael Wilson put runners at second and third with nobody out in the sixth. One out later a sacrifice fly scored Lewis to make it 4-1 in favor of the Wild Things. Three doubles led to three runs for Florence in the ninth but it was too late.
For Starters...
Peter Gehle is making his ninth start of the season and is coming off an excellent performance against the Gateway Grizzlies on July 1. He went six and two thirds innings, scattering six hits and only allowing one run in a no-decision. The Freedom have a record of 5-3 when Gehle starts this season. Gehle, 26, is a former 27th round draft pick of the Chicago White Sox in 2010 out of Azusa Pacific University. The Flagstaff, Arizona native spent two years in the White Sox organization before joining Sioux Falls of the American Association in 2012. He spent 2013 in the AA as well, this time with the Winnipeg Goldeyes.
Rubber match...
Tonight is the rubber match of the three-game series between the Freedom and Wild Things. Florence is 3-4 in rubber matches on the 2014 season. The Freedom are looking to win their sixth home series of the year and their second against Washington with a victory tonight. They are 5-3 in home series on the season.
Against left-handers...
Sam Eberle leads the Freedom with a .385 batting average against left-handed pitchers. Cole Miles is hitting .324 against southpaws and Ben Kline checks in at .310. Joe Staley in particular has struggled against left-handed pitchers, as he is only hitting .208 this season compared to .286 overall.
