Flames light the lamp in shootout

On a night that the Monsters yielded 7,572 fans, few could deny the excitement at The Q, despite a Lake Erie loss. The Monsters took a gritty Quad City team the distance and came up short in a shootout, 3-2 (SOL).

The Flames started off slow but turned up the heat in the first as Cam Cunning lit the lamp at the 18:04 mark.

Not a moment after the initial face off of the second period, Steve Margeson notched his first goal of the season and the first of his career as a Monster. Margeson found himself alone in the left circle with a snap shot that caught Flames goaltender Curtis McElhinney on his heels. Margeson was assisted by Brad Richardson, his first assist as a Monster.

"I just came in from the point on four-on-four and I was trying to get open for Richardson. He made an unbelievable pass to me. I just looked up and saw an opening and tried to put it there and it went," said Monsters defenseman Steve Margeson.

With 1:44 remaining in the second, Carsen Germyn caught a break in the zone as the Flames were on the advantage 5-3. The goal marked Germyn's fourth of the season.

To tie the game up at 2-2, T.J. Hensick made a pass from the seat of his pants to Kenny Roche on the doorstep, who tipped it to an eager David Jones. Jones finished off Hensick's dirty work and poked home the puck. Jones' tally marks his sixth point in seven games. Hensick's second assist of the game marked his first multi-point game as a Monster.

With under 0:30 remaining in the game, Margeson slid across the goal mouth to stop a potential game winner and forced the Monsters to an extra set.

In the overtime period, the two teams played to a stalemate and both found themselves in the late hours of a shootout.

When it was all said and done, the Flames burned the back of the net on the fifth and final shootout as Derek Couture finished off Lake Erie.

Hensick and Jones netted the only two shootout tallies for the Monsters, while Grant Stevenson, Dustin Boyd and Couture did the job for the Flames.

The Monsters look to bounce back and get their first win at home tomorrow versus division foe Toronto.

"The team is still developing chemistry and getting better each game, but we still have a ways to go. The offense is getting there. The last five games, the opponent has only scored three goals or less," said Monsters head coach Joe Sacco.

Although Lake Erie ended up with a loss, they earned one point for their effort in the shootout.

"It could have been better. It was frustrating we couldn't get the extra point. It's the second game around with that. We just need to get back out and practice more. Those are two points we could have had," said Monsters goaltender Mike Wall.

Wall made 42 saves in 44 shots on the game, while his counterpart McElhinney turned away 25 of 27 he saw.
