
Flacco, Pettit Lead Shorebirds to 8-3 Win in Game Three

Kannapolis, N.C. - Jacob Pettit and Clay Schrader combined to hold the Kannapolis Intimidators (24-17) scoreless over the final six innings as the Delmarva Shorebirds (25-19) took game three of the series by a final of 8-3 on Sunday night at Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium. Mike Flacco boosted his batting average to .327 with a 4-for-5 day at the plate that included a double, triple and two singles.
For a second straight night, Kannapolis took an early lead in the first inning. Ross Wilson hit a leadoff single to left field. Then, Drew Lee stung a double down the left field line to put runners at second and third. Trayce Thompson followed with a sacrifice fly liner into center field to give Kannapolis a 1-0 lead. Then, Mike Blanke hit a single into right-center to score Lee.
The Shorebirds answered in the second. Mike Flacco extended his hitting streak to eight games with a sharp double to the left field corner. With two outs, Dudley Leonora hit a single through the left side of the infield to bring home Flacco.
In the third, Kyle Eveland blasted his third home run of the season to give Kannapolis a 3-1 advantage.
The Shorebirds pulled within a run in the fourth. Flacco hit a towering triple off the warning track in right-center field. Then, Michael Ohlman picked up his 18th RBI of the season on a groundout to second base.
In the fifth, Delmarva tied the game at 3-3. Mikey Planeta got things started with a two-out double to deep center field. Then, Schoop hit a double to the warning track in center to score Planeta.
The Shorebirds took their first lead of the game in the sixth inning. Flacco started the inning with a single. Michael Ohlman walked. Adam Gaylord followed with a double to left-center field to score Flacco. Dudley Leonora hit a bouncer up the middle to score Ohlman to give the Shorebirds a 5-3 edge. Then, with Gaylord at third, Kannapolis pitcher Spencer Arroyo threw high to first on a pickoff move to give the 'Birds a 6-3 lead.
In the seventh, Gaylord hit an RBI single through the right side of the infield to score Schutz to increase the lead to 7-3. Gaylord finished with his first three-hit and three-RBI game of the season.
Jacob Pettit earned his fifth win of the season in seven stellar innings. Pettit retired 15 of the final 20 batters he faced and allowed only two runners past first base from the second through the seventh inning. The left-hander allowed eight hits and three runs.
Clay Schrader extended his scoreless innings streak to 15 by throwing two scoreless innings after Pettit. Schrader has not allowed a hit in his last six innings (three appearances).
Kannapolis starter Spencer Arroyo was pinned with the loss in 5.2 innings.
The Shorebirds and Intimidators will play the series finale on Monday night at 7:05 p.m. RHP Scott Copeland is the scheduled starter for Delmarva.
