BlueClaws Beat Power 7-3 for 5th Straight Win
May 22, 2011 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Jersey Shore BlueClaws News Release
CHARLESTON, WV - The Lakewood BlueClaws continue to play well away from home as they won their 5th straight game on Sunday. This time it was a 7-3 win over the West Virginia Power in the 3rd game of the 4 game series between the 2 clubs. Lakewood is now 9-4 in their last 13 games on the road, and is 5-1 on their current road trip. With the win, Lakewood improves to 21-22 and has now passed the Power (20-22) by ½ game in the South Atlantic League Northern Division standings and is out of the cellar.
David Buchanan bounced back from a rough outing his last start, and pitched well for the BlueClaws on Sunday. He went 6 innings and allowed just 1 run on 6 hits, 1 walk, and struck out 2. Buchanan is now 6-2 on the year, and is tied with Hagerstown's Taylor Jordan for the League lead in wins. His ERA is now down to 2.21, which is good for tops in the SAL among qualified pitchers. Colby Shreve and Tyler Knigge combined to get the final 9 outs for Lakewood as they won 5 straight games for the first time since July 2-6 of 2010.
A day after they scored 11 runs on 14 hits without hitting a single HR, the BlueClaws busted out the big bats on Sunday smacking 3 homers. They combined for 13 hits as a team, and the trio of Edgar Duran, Domingo Santana, and Anthony Hewitt all went deep off of West Virginia pitching. Duran smacked a 2-run HR in the 2nd inning for his 2nd long ball of the year, Hewitt led off the 6th inning with a solo shot for his 5th HR in 2011, and then 2 batters later Santana hit his 5th HR as well with a 2-run HR. Santana turned in his 2nd straight 3 hit day following up his 3-5 performance Saturday with a 3-4, 2 RBI showing on Sunday. Jim Murphy and Cameron Rupp each also pitched in with 2 base hits in the ballgame.
Monday morning the BlueClaws will take the field for the final game of their 7 game road trip looking to make it 6 straight wins. It will be a battle of 1st Rounders on the mound with 27th overall pick in last June's MLB Amateur Draft LHP Jesse Biddle throwing for Lakewood and the 2nd overall pick from the same draft RHP Jameson Taillon tossing for the Power. First pitch Monday is scheduled for 11:05 am.
