BlueClaws Get ahead Early, Stay in Front for Win

The West Virginia Power lost 7-3 Sunday afternnon to the Lakewood BlueClaws at Appalachian Power Park. The BlueClaws led 4-0 after two innings en route to their third straight win over the Power in this series.

Lakewood took a 2-0 in the top of the first on three hits, keyed by a double from Jim Murphy. They added a pair of runs in the second when Edgar Duran hit a 2-2 pitch from spot starter Zac Fuesser over the wall in left with Cameron Rupp on base for a 4-0 lead.

West Virginia got on the scoreboard in the fifth inning. Eric Avila double to lead off the home half of the fifth, moved to third on a ground out, and score on a sacrifice fly by Mel Rojas Jr.

The BlueClaws final three runs came in the sixth inning against Power reliever Brooks Pounders. Anthony Hewitt led off with his fifth home run of the season, Miguel Alvarez singled, and Domingo Santana hit a two-run home run to create a 7-1 Lakewood lead.

The Power tallied their final runs in the bottom of the ninth when Elias Diaz and Andy Vasquez each singled, and both scored on Avila's second double of the game.

Fuesser (1-1) was charged with the loss after allowing four runs over five innings on seven hits, while David Buchanan (6-2) pitched six complete with one run allowed on six hits for the win. Avila, Diaz, and Dan Grovatt had two hits apiece in the loss as West Virginia dropped two games under .500.

The Power and BlueClaws close this series on Monday with an 11:05 am first pitch. West Virginia will toss Jameson Taillon on the first of two Grand Slam School Days this month against Lakewood's Jesse Biddle.
