Brockton Rox News Release
Worcester, Mass. - The Worcester Tornadoes fell one home run shy of tying a league record as they belted five in a 9-1 rout of the Brockton Rox on Thursday night at Hanover Insurance Park. Brockton's lone run came on 3B Phillip Cuadrado's ninth-inning long ball.
The Tornadoes (15-24) grabbed the lead in the first and never looked back on a solo shot by 3B Omar Pena, his second of the season. Both of Pena's homers have come against the Rox this season. Worcester added two more on a two-run blast by CF Danny Santiesteban in the second inning.
Solo homers from DH Nick Salotti in the fourth and LF Ryan Crespi in the fifth, gave Worcester a 5-0 lead. RF Stantrel Smith cracked a two-run bomb in the sixth to go along with an RBI double from Santiesteban as Worcester then built an 8-0 advantage.
2B Mark Minicozzi chippin in with an RBI double in the seventh for the ninth and final Worcester run.
Cuadrado hit his seventh home run of the year in the ninth inning as the Rox (22-16) tallied just four hits for the game. SS Dominic Ramos, C Chris Grossman and CF Chris Valencia accounted for the other three base hits.
RHP John Kelly (4-2), the former Rox pitcher and pitching coach, earned the victory for Worcester with six shut-out innings, allowing just three hits with two walks and seven strikeouts.
The man who just surpassed him on the all-time wins list in Rox history, RHP Wayne Lundgren (5-2), suffered the defeat. Lundgren gave up five runs in five innings, including four of the five Worcester homers.
The two teams are back at it tomorrow night with a 7:05 p.m. first pitch from Hanover Insurance Park. It will be RHP Mike Smith (3-3) taking the mound for the Rox against Tornadoes RHP Matt Giusti (2-5).
