New Jersey Jackals News Release

Quebec City, QC - Jackals' first baseman Jabe Bergeron homered twice, but it was Quebec third baseman Robert Wagner's three-run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning that carried the Quebec Capitales past the New Jersey Jackals 4-2 on Thursday night in front of 3,849 fans at Stade Municipal.

In his first game in a Capitales uniform, the newly-signed Wagner broke a 1-1 tie and chased starter Nick Asselin from the game with one out in the bottom of the sixth inning when he launched a three run shot following a single by designated hitter Jeremy Hunt and a walk by first baseman Alex Nunez.

Bergeron answered back though with his second leadoff homer of the day in the top of the seventh to cut the Jackals' deficit to 4-2. New Jersey relievers Edward Rodriguez and Edgar Estanga combined to retire all eight batters they faced and shortstop Mike DeJesus laced a two-out double to left to bring the tying run to bat, but Quebec's Dan Sausville induced a game-ending pop out to end the threat and notch a two-inning save in his first relief appearance of the season.

After Quebec plated the game's first run in the bottom of the first inning on a one-out RBI groundout off the bat of right fielder Sebastian Boucher, Bergeron countered with a leadoff blast in the top of the second to even the score at 1-1. That score held until Wagner's home run.

The only damage against Quebec starter Karl Gelinas (2-1) was the pair of homers by Bergeron. Gelinas earned the win after allowing five hits and striking out five batters over seven innings. Asselin (1-5) dropped his fourth straight decision after yielding four runs on eight hits with three walks and one strikeout over 5 1/3 frames.

The Jackals and Capitales continue their three-game series on Friday at 7:05 p.m. when New Jersey sends left-hander Ryan Lobban to the mound against Quebec right-hander Michel Simard. Cody Chrusciel has the live call on the Jackals webcast beginning 10 minutes prior to first pitch at www.jackals.com.
