BELOIT, WI - Snappers starter Adrian Salcedo threw zeroes on the board for the first six innings of the game as the Snappers led 2-0. Then, in the seventh, the Kernels tied the game at two to set up the heroics for first-basemen Lance Ray whose two-RBI double broke the tie and gave the Snappers the 7-2 victory.
The Snappers (36-31), who are fighting for a Midwest League Western Division Wild Card spot, started the scoring in the fourth with one run and another in the sixth. In the fourth, hit-by-pitch extraordinaire Nate Roberts singled, then stole a base and after two wild pitches for the Kernels, scored the games first run.
With the game tied at two in the eighth inning, Ray stepped to the plate and drove a double into the left-center field gap to score pinch-runner Daniel Santana and Jairo Perez. Catcher Tobias Streich continued the scoring with his first double of the year to score Ray. Finally, Andrew Leer singled to center to score Striech and Hyeong-Rok Choi.
In the sixth, birthday boy Michael Gonzales knocked a double and later scored on a Jairo Perez RBI single. Perez is now hitting .321 on the season and finished tonights game 1-for-3 after earning last nights "Brodie Trophy Player of the Game" with a home run. On his 23rd birthday, Gonzales finished 2-for-4 with a double and raised his average to .296. He will be participating in next week's MWL All-Star Game in Davenport, IA.
Adrian Salcedo continued his dominance as he pitched 6 2/3 innings, allowing two earned runs on four hits. His season ERA is 3.06 and will be joining Gonzales at the All-Star game along with Daniel Ortiz.
For the Kernels (30-37), they managed only two runs on six hits. Rolando Gomez provided half of those hits as he was 3-for-4 with a double. Brandon Decker and Marcus Nidiffer contributed RBI's in the loss.
Tonights "Brodie Trophy Player of the Game" goes to Lance Ray, whose game-winning, two-RBI double broke the tie and led to the Snappers win. He finished the night 3-for-4 with two RBI. He continued to be the Snappers hottest hitter as his average is now .253 after hitting only .192 in April.
The Snappers now hit the road to Burlington to take on the Western Division First-Half Champs, the Burlington Bees. They return home after the All-Star break to once again face the Cedar Rapids Kernels for Minnesota Twins weekend at Pohlman Field. Twins mascot TC the Bear will be in attendance along with the Target Field organist. The Snappers will be wearing specialty themed Twins jerseys that will be up for auction all weekend long. Finally, Twins great Tony Oliva will be on hand to sign autographs.
The Beloit Snappers are a member of the Midwest League and a Class-A affiliate of the Minnesota Twins. For ticket information, contact the Snappers office at 608-362-2272 or visit the website at www.snappersbaseball.com.
