Dayton Dragons News Release
Fort Wayne, Ind.-David Vidal belted two home runs and tied a club record with seven runs batted in to lead the Dayton Dragons to a 14-4 victory over the Fort Wayne TinCaps on Thursday night. The Dragons established season highs in hits (18), runs, and margin of victory in the game.
Vidal tied a club record also held by Adam Dunn (2000), Joey Votto (2004), and Juan Francisco (2007). Ironically, he tied the record in the seventh inning when he was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to force in a run. Vidal had a two-run home run, three-run home run, and RBI double earlier in the game.
Dominic D'Anna was 4 for 6 for the Dragons, becoming the first Dragons player this season to collect four hits in a game. Donald Lutz added three hits and three runs batted in.
The Dragons, who were shutout 1-0 on Wednesday, hit for the cycle as a team in the first inning on Thursday with two singles, a double, a triple, and a home run by Vidal. They sent nine batters to the plate and scored four runs in the inning, then followed up with five more in the second.
In the first, Theo Bowe led off with a triple to the fence in right and scored on Devin Lohman's RBI ground out. Dominic D'Anna then doubled to center and scored on Donald Lutz's infield hit. Vidal followed with a two-run home run to right field to make it 4-0.
In the second, Lutz delivered a bases-loaded double to drive in two, and Vidal followed with another home run to right, a three-run shot and his eighth of the year, to make it 9-0.
The Dragons eventually built a 14-1 lead before Fort Wayne scored three times in the ninth to close out the scoring.
Dragons starting pitcher Stalin Gerson (1-0) picked up the win in his second Midwest League start. He worked five innings, allowing six hits and one run with no walks and four strikeouts.
The Dragons went 6-4 on their 10-game road trip and improved their record to 34-33 on the year. They will need to win two out of three games against Lansing in their final series of the first half to finish the half with a winning record.
The Dragons host Lansing on Friday at 7:00 p.m. The game will be televised on WHIO Digital Channel 7.2. Former Reds pitcher Doug Bair, who served as the Dragons pitching coach in 2007 and '08, will provide color commentary. The Dragons consecutive game sell-out streak stands at 805, nine short of the all-time sports record.
