Winston-Salem Dash News Release

ZEBULON, N.C. - Thanks to a five-run eighth inning, Winston-Salem outlasted Carolina 7-3 in the series opener on Tuesday night at Five County Stadium.

Trailing 3-2 in the deciding frame, the Dash (23-27, 61-53) mounted their rally with two outs against Michael Petersen (1-2). The right-hander loaded the bases by issuing walks to Mitch Roman, Johan Cruz and Tate Blackman. After Anthony Bender replaced Peterson, the new pitcher hit Steele Walker to knot the contest at three.

The next batter, Tyler Frost, bounced a go-ahead, two-run single to right-center against Bender to give Winston-Salem a 5-3 lead. Then, Andrew Vaughn drilled a two-run double to cap the scoring. Frost finished 3-for-4 with three RBIs, and Vaughn recorded a 2-for-3 effort with two RBIs and two doubles.

Jose Nin (4-3) earned the victory with two scoreless innings of relief, while Jake Elliott and Will Kincanon each posted a shutout frame to lock down the win.

Kicking off their last series against a Southern Division opponent, Winston-Salem fell down early against Carolina (21-30, 60-60). The Mudcats loaded the bases in the third inning against Zach Lewis before Wes Rogers lined a run-scoring single to center to make it a 1-0 contest. Then, Tristen Lutz lofted a sacrifice fly to center to put Carolina up two.

The Dash responded in the fourth inning against J.T. Hintzen. Vaughn doubled to lead off the frame, and, three batters later, Jameson Fisher lined an RBI double down the right-field line to cut the deficit to one.

Carolina plated an unearned run in the fifth against Lewis, who lasted five innings and struck out three in his first start against Carolina. Meanwhile, right before their rally in the eighth, Frost brought the Dash within one with a two-out, RBI double to right in the seventh. All seven of the Dash's runs on Tuesday came with two outs.

The Dash continue their three-game set against the Mudcats on Wednesday at 11 a.m. Winston-Salem sends right-hander Jorgan Cavanerio (7-2, 3.17 ERA) to the hill against right-hander Christian Taugner (5-7, 4.79 ERA). Pregame coverage begins at 10:45 a.m., and fans can catch all of the action on wsdash.com/broadcast, MiLB.tv and the TuneIn Radio App.
