June 25, 2016 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Calgary Hitmen News Release
Calgary, AB - The Calgary Hitmen Hockey Club is proud to announce five players were selected this weekend in the 2016 National Hockey League Draft.
Following Friday's first round selection of Jake Bean 13th overall by the Carolina Hurricanes, four more Hitmen had their name called on Saturday at First Niagara Center in Buffalo, New York.
Carsen Twarynski, who had a breakout season going from six to 20 goals and took home the team's EllisDon Humanitarian Award, was drafted in the third round, 82nd overall, by the Philadelphia Flyers.
Then in the fifth round a pair of Hitmen had their names called. Jordy Stallard, who more than tripled his goal total from the previous season by scoring 21 times, was taken 127th by the Winnipeg Jets. Beck Malenstyn, recipient of Calgary's Chrysler Canada Inc. Scholastic Player of the Year Award in 2015-16 and gold medalist with Canada at the 2015 U18 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Cup, was selected 145th by the Washington Capitals.
Jakob Stukel, who topped the Hitmen in goals with 36 this past season, was drafted in the sixth round, 154th overall, by the Vancouver Canucks.
"With Jake Bean selected on Friday night in the first round and now four more Hitmen today, this has been a fantastic weekend for our fans, our team and our franchise," said Hitmen General Manager and Vice President of Business Operations Mike Moore. "It's a reflection of the hard work and dedication our coaches and scouts have made in finding and developing these players and the commitment of the individual players themselves in getting better every day. On behalf of the entire Hitmen team we congratulate them on this outstanding accomplishment. We expect all five of them to have an impact on our success going forward."
The five selections were the most from any one team in the Western Hockey League and will go down as one of the most successful draft classes in franchise history. Only the 1999 draft produced more NHL picks from the Hitmen with six, while the 2014 draft class also produced five.
