Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release

The Winnipeg Goldeyes had plenty of chances to return home with a victory on Wednesday night, but this time, it just wasn't to be.

The Fish led 6-4 heading into the fifth and 6-5 going into the seventh. They had a runner at second in a 6-6 tie in the top of the ninth when Ridge Carpenter delivered a two-out single, but Lou Ott was thrown out at home. Then John Plefka couldn't hold on in the bottom of the 11th as the Explorers won it 7-6 on a bases-loaded single by T.J. Bohn.

By all accounts, this should have been Winnipeg's game. The Goldeyes outhit Sioux City 17-10, but all 17 Winnipeg hits were singles. Price Kendall led the way with five of them. In the end, the Goldeyes left 17 runners on base.

With the loss, the 42-28 Goldeyes limped home with a record of 1-5 on a six-game road trip through Sioux Falls and Sioux City and are now just a game ahead of the St. Paul Saints in the race for first in the American Association's North Division. The Saints are heading to Winnipeg for a weekend series that starts on Friday night at Shaw Park.

Trailing 1-0 in the top of the second inning, the Fish scored twice as Price Kendall singled home Lou Ott and Kody Kaiser singled home Ridge Carpenter. The Goldeyes took a 3-1 lead in the third when Carpenter, who had three hits on the night, drove home Ott from second with a single. In the fourth, now trailing 4-3, the Goldeyes scored twice as Luis Alen singled to score Wes Long from third and Brian Myrow from second. Then, in the fifth, Winnipeg took a 6-4 lead as Kendall scored from third on a ground out by Kaiser.

But that was all the Fish could muster and the Explorers won it the second extra frame.

Sioux City reliever Andrew Snowden (2-4, 4.82) pitched six complete innings and got the win for Sioux Falls, while Plefka (2-2, 4.35) suffered the loss for Winnipeg. Goldeyes starter Isaac Hess lasted only two innings and gave up a four runs on three hits.

The Goldeyes climbed on the bus and headed back to Winnipeg right after the game. The team has Thursday off and will open a three-game series with the St. Paul Saints on Friday night at 7 p.m. at Shaw Park. That game can be heard live with Paul Edmonds, on Sports Radio 1290.
