Pheasants Lose Back-And-Forth Contest in Gary

GARY, Ind. - The Sioux Falls Pheasants could not hold early leads on Wednesday night and came up on the short end of an 8-6 rubber game against the Gary SouthShore RailCats.

Reggie Abercrombie belted two home runs in his first two at-bats to give the Pheasants leads of 2-0 and 4-2, but the RailCats continued to rebound, scoring in every inning but the first and eighth.

With the game tied at 6-6 in the bottom of the sixth, Cristian Guerrero knocked home Mike Massaro to give Gary SouthShore a 7-6 advantage. Mike Rohde swatted a solo home run to lead off the eighth inning for the 8-6 margin. Guerrero was 3-for-5 with three runs scored and an RBI.

Pheasants starter Brandon Rapoza exited after four innings and was relieved for four innings by Barry Fowler (4-4). Fowler took the loss, giving up four runs, two earned, on five hits.

Gary SouthShore reliever Brian Grening (5-1) earned a win for pitching parts of the sixth, seventh and eighth innings.

Closer Travis Minix tossed a clean ninth inning for his fifth save of the year.

The Pheasants' defense committed errors to begin both the fifth and sixth innings, resulting in unearned runs each time. The Pheasants were charged with nine errors total in the three-game series.

Abercrombie led the Pheasants' offense with a 3-for-5 night, including the pair of home runs and three RBI. He has 12 home runs on the season. Gus Milner was 2-for-2 with a single and a double.

The loss drops the Pheasants' record to 32-38.

The Pheasants return home for a three-game series against the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks at 7:05 p.m. on Thursday, July 28, at Sioux Falls Stadium. It's Thirsty Thursday. Fans can purchase $2 domestic drafts all night long.
