Shreveport-Bossier Captains News Release

SHREVEPORT, LA -The Shreveport-Bossier Captains, presented by U-Auto Pull-It Auto Parts, partnership with the Food Bank of Northwest Louisiana, referred to now as "Project: Strike Out Hunger", got underway last night with the first of two events being held at Fair Grounds Field.

According to published reports," there has been a dramatic increase in hunger in the United States in the last three years of 2008, 2009 and 2010". Some believe it is due to the economic downturn but truth be known many Americans have been going hungry for decades and centuries. It is fair to say that hunger is not only a nationwide epidemic but a worldwide concern that could be diminished with outreach by those who are fortunate enough to have the means to help those who aren't as fortunate.

"Project: Strike Out Hunger" has been created on the premise that there is no off-season for hunger which was met with a very impressive first event when Captains' fans and area grocers stepped up to the plate with donation equaling nearly 1,000 cans of non-perishable food, during last night's game against the Grand Prairie AirHogs.

"The Captains were extremely pleased with outpour of support from our fan base as well as local grocers", Captains general manager Chet Carey said. "We know that many of grocery stores in the area work closely with the food bank but when we called upon them for additional support they came through for us. We are grateful for the donations made by Super One, Brookshire's, Albertson's, Walmart, and Kroger's and last but certainly not least, for the donations brought to the park by our fans. Thank you to everyone for helping the Captains build a better community".

The next "Project: Strike Out Hunger" will take place on Tuesday, August 23 when the Captains take on the same Grand Prairie AirHogs. Again, where fans who donate a minimum of 6 cans of food and/or non-perishable food items will receive a free reserved ticket to that night's game. Fans who donate 10 or more cans of food and/or non-perishable food items also receive a free reserved ticket to a future 2011 regular season home game.

The Captains are currently on a six-game home stand that runs through Sunday, July 31 with two more games against Grand Prairie before they welcome the Amarillo Sox on Friday to finish out the home stand. After this home stand the Captains travel to El Paso to begin a short three-game series against the Diablos before returning home on Friday, August 5. Single-game tickets are available for purchase in-person or over the phone by visiting the Captains Executive Offices at 2901 Pershing Boulevard at Fair Grounds Field or by calling (318) 636-5555. VISA, MasterCard, Discover, and American Express accepted.
