Wichita Wingnuts News Release
WICHITA, KS- The Wichita Wingnuts completed a three-game sweep of the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks, winning 14-9 at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium on Wednesday night.
All nine of the Wingnuts' starters scored a run and reached base with either a hit or a walk. Eight of the Wingnuts' starters had at least one hit. Brent Clevlen hit two home runs, and in the process, set a Wingnuts' team record by homering in a fourth consecutive game. Josh Horn had two hits and drove in four.
The Wingnuts broke things open early, scoring 10 runs in the bottom of the first. Mike Conroy led off the inning with a groundball to RedHawks' starter Josh Smith. Smith fielded the ball cleanly, but bounced his throw to first. The ball went down the right field line and allowed Conroy to take third base. Horn drove in Conroy with a groundout to second to give Wichita a 1-0 lead.
Clevlen followed with his first home run, lining it just over the left-center field fence. Juan Richardson and Jorge Delgado drew back-to-back walks to put runners on first and second. Josh Workman pulled a single through the right side to score Richardson and send Delgado to third. Peter Barrows lifted a sacrifice fly to center field that scored Delgado to make it 4-0.
After Workman stole second, Edwin Bellorin crushed a two-run home run over the left field wall to increase the Wingnuts' lead to six runs. With two outs and no one on base, Tyler Robbins walked and advanced to third when Conroy doubled into right field. Horn was next, and drove in his second and third runs of the inning with a groundball single off of the second base bag. Clevlen hit a two-run home run to left-center to cap off the 10-run outburst.
Chad Sherman earned the win for the Wingnuts, allowing four earned runs on seven hits in six innings. Sherman struck out six and walked three. Sherman struck out the side in the top of the fifth.
The RedHawks got on the board in the top of the third on Zach Penprase's two-out, RBI double down the right field line. The Wingnuts responded with two in the bottom half of the inning. Delgado led off with a towering home run to left field that made it 11-1. Later in the frame, Conroy singled to center with two outs to drive in Barrows from third base.
Penprase hit a two-run homer in the sixth while Jesse Hoorelbeke added an infield, RBI single to cut the lead to 12-4. The Wingnuts answered back in the bottom of the sixth with RBI doubles from Horn and Richardson.
Fargo scored one in the seventh, and two in both the eighth and ninth innings, but four relievers kept the Wingnuts in front through the end of the game.
Wichita worked out 10 walks in the win. The Wingnuts' four home runs tied a franchise single-game record.
Smith took the loss, allowing 10 runs, two earned, in two-thirds of an inning. Smith gave up eight hits, three walks, and did not strike out a batter.
In the bottom of the eighth inning, the RedHawks turned a groundball triple play on Jorge Delgado with first and second and no outs.
