Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release

It is said that good things come to those who wait. If that's the case, good things are in store for Goldeyes fans.

Manager Hal Lanier announced today the signing of pitcher Brad Purcell. The club leader the past two years in strikeouts, he arrived in Winnipeg today after beginning the season in Taiwan and will be in uniform tonight when the Goldeyes open the second half at home against Sioux Falls.

Purcell, 25, went 10-5 last year with a 3.33 ERA and a club-best 119 strikeouts. His ERA, also a club-best, put him eighth in the league while his strikeouts were third in the league and third-most for a single year in franchise history.

One of five Goldeyes to represent the club at the 2004 NL All-Star Game, Purcell joined Jeff Bittiger (1994 & 1995) last year as the only pitchers to lead the team in strikeouts in consecutive seasons. His .227 opposition average also led all Winnipeg starters.

In two years with Winnipeg, Purcell is 18-10 with a 3.16 ERA. At home, he is 12-4 with a 2.33 ERA, fanning 137 in 143 innings.

FISH FOOD: First baseman Donnie Ross was placed on the Bereavement List following the death early today of his mother. He returned home to Tennessee this morning and is not expected to rejoin the club until after the all-star break.
