Moreno and Myers win Northern League weekly awards

Outfielder Jorge Moreno of the Winnipeg Goldeyes and lefthander Damien Myers of the Joliet JackHammers have been selected as the Rawlings Northern League Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, for July 4-10, it was announced today by the league office.

Moreno batted .531 (17-32) with one homer and ten rbi in seven games for the Goldeyes last week. The righthanded batter led the league in runs (11), doubles (7), and total bases (25) while tying for first in hits. He was second in slugging (.906), tied for second in batting, and tied for third in rbi. Moreno hit safely in all seven games with two or more hits in six of those. For the season, Moreno is batting .310 with five homers and 30 rbi in 47 games.

Myers pitched a two-hit complete game shutout to defeat Schaumburg, 2-0 on July 8. He did not issue a walk and had eight strikeouts in winning his first game of the season. The lefthander is now 1-5, 6.20 in nine games/seven starts in 2005.

Other players considered were Carlos Duncan of Calgary, Brandon Kaye of Edmonton, Kelley Gulledge of Fargo-Moorhead, Jayson Drobiak of Joliet, Alex Taylor of Gary, Brandon Jones of Kansas City, Albenis Machado, Kevin Sullivan, and Bryan Warner of Lincoln, Tonayne Brown of St. Paul, Justin Hendrickson of Schaumburg, Marcel Longmire of Sioux City, and Edgard Clemente of Sioux Falls.

Pitchers nominated were Calgary's Cody Cillo, Edmonton's Jim Harrison, Fargo-Moorhead's Taft Cable, Gary's Jamie Bennett, Kansas City's David Viane, Lincoln's Mike Kersten and Kyle Ruwe, St. Paul's Adam Larson, Schaumburg's Matt Bailie, Sioux City's Chris Swiatkiewicz and Sean Kramer, Sioux Falls' Julio Medina, and Winnipeg's Carlos Torres.

KANSAS CITY'S MIKE BROWN SUSPENDED FOR TWO GAMES BY NORTHERN LEAGUE

The Northern League announced today that infielder Mike Brown of the Kansas City T-Bones has been suspended for two games as a result of his ejection and subsequent actions on July 10 versus the Gary SouthShore RailCats.

Brown will begin his suspension tonight when Kansas City hosts Fargo-Moorhead. He has also been fined for the incident. The suspension is subject to appeal, in which case it will be held in abeyance until the appeal is heard by Northern League Commissioner Mike Stone.

MATT MONTGOMERY ADDED TO NORTH DIVISION ALL-STAR TEAM

Righthander Matt Montgomery of the Sioux Falls Canaries has been added to the North Division pitching staff for the 2005 Northern League All-Star Game on July 19 in Gary. Montgomery replaced Fargo-Moorhead lefthander Joe Sergent, who declined the invitation to attend to personal matters during the all-star break.

Montgomery is 1-2, 4.41 with nine saves in 16 appearances for Sioux Falls this season.
