Schaumburg Flyers News Release

SCHAUMBURG, IL- The Schaumburg Flyers opened the second half of the Northern League season with a 2-1 loss to the Lincoln Saltdogs at Alexian Field on Tuesday night. Flyers starter Anthony Boughner (3-6) pitched a complete game, but two errors allowed Lincoln to score the only runs they would need. The Flyers are 0-1 in the second half and 16-33 overall. The Saltdogs are 1-0 and 28-21 overall.

The Flyers got on the board first with a run in the third inning. Tim Marks led off with a double to right field and was advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Bryan Russo. Jarrod Patterson then singled to right with two outs to bring Marks home. It was Patterson's first hit as a Flyer after signing with the club last week.

Bryan Warner doubled to left field leading off the fourth inning for Lincoln. Pichi Balet then lined a ball towards Nelson Gord in center field, but Gord could not make the catch and was charged with an error. Warner scored from second to tie the game.

The game remained tied until the seventh when Albenis Machado doubled for the first Lincoln hit since Warner's double. Machado scored the winning run two batters later as Eric Cole could not hang on to a Cory Harris fly ball near the right field line. It was Cole's fourth error of the season.

Schaumburg had several other chances to score against Saltdogs starter Humberto Cardenas (3-2), but they could not capitalize. Gord advanced to third base with two outs in the first inning, but Cole struck out swinging. Russo doubled to left with two down in the seventh, but Geoff McCallum popped out to end the inning.

Cardenas gave up five hits in his eight innings of work. He struck out five and walked four. Jared Hoerman worked a 1-2-3 ninth inning for his seventh save. Boughner allowed six hits while striking out four and walking four. He has given up six runs in his last two starts, all of them unearned, and lost both games.

Flyers pitcher Matt Bailie was named the starting pitcher for the South Division in the 2005 Northern League All-Star Game on Tuesday. Chris Weekly was selected as a reserve. Catcher Tim Marks and designated hitter Josue Lopez were announced as starters on Monday. Weekly won MVP honors at the 2004 game and is the lone repeat All-Star for the Flyers.
