ABOUT LAST NIGHT: Columbia split a doubleheader with Asheville on Thursday, dropping the first game 5-3 in nine innings before bouncing back valiantly with a 4-2 victory in game two.
GAME ONE: Blake Tiberi slashed a double and a single and drove in all three of the Fireflies runs. Each team scored a run in the eighth frame before the Tourists pulled ahead for could with a pair of runs in the ninth. Chris Viall lasted a season-long six innings and punched out six.
GAME TWO: Ali Sanchez ripped a two-run homer and starter Anthony Kay nearly went the distance in a 4-2 win. Kay struck out 11 and did not walk anyone over 6.2 IP. The lefty picked up his fourth win of the year.
POWER SURGE: Sanchez's blast-and recent streak at the plate-helped earn the catcher a promotion. The 21-year-old Venezuelan prospect was transferred to the advanced-A St. Lucie Mets on Friday after hitting .328 over his last 16 games (since June 6). Sanchez becomes the fifth Firefly (Dan Rizzie, David Peterson, Wuilmer Becerra, Stephen Villines) to earn a promotion this year.
FERM-TASTIC: Shortstop Edgardo Fermin recorded hits in both games of the doubleheader on Thursday and has now hit safely in 11 straight games. The 20-year-old is hitting .364 (16-for-44) over the 11-game hit streak (since June 14). Fermin has smoked six extra-base hits in that span and five RBIs.
THE OTHER GUYS: Asheville has six Rockies prospects on its roster according to MLB.com. That includes former first round draft pick out of Georgia, Robert Tyler:
