Weissert Becomes Fifth RiverDog Pitcher to Garner Promotion to Tampa
June 29, 2018 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Charleston RiverDogs News Release
CHARLESTON, S.C. - The New York Yankees have announced that RiverDogs right-handed reliever Greg Weissert has been promoted to High-A Tampa on Friday, becoming the seventh member of Charleston's Opening Day roster to advance to the next level.
Weissert, 23, fanned 50 opposing batters over 34 1/3 innings of work in 17 games with the Dogs this season. His 13.1 strikeout per nine inning ratio currently ranks as the fourth-highest among relievers in the South Atlantic League circuit. The former 18th round pick out of Fordham was 2-2 with a 2.62 ERA in his second stint as a RiverDog.
Weissert follows four pitchers and two positions players that moved up from Charleston to the Tarpons. Utility infielder David Metzgar was on the Opening Day roster in early April and has played seven games with Tampa but was reassigned from Charleston to Extended Spring Training first.
The RiverDogs (38-36, 5-1) go for their first home sweep of the season in Friday night's homestand finale. Postgame fireworks presented by Home Telecom will follow the evening contest before the Dogs head out for a four-game road trip in Greenville starting Saturday night.
RiverDogs single-game tickets, including options to the Riley Park Club, are now available for the 2018 campaign, the club's 25th season as the RiverDogs and their "175th season in dog years." Ticket information can be secured by contacting the box office at (843) 577-DOGS (3647) or online at www.riverdogs.com/tickets.
