RiverDogs Shut Out, Fail to Claim First Home Sweep
June 29, 2018 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Charleston RiverDogs News Release
CHARLESTON, S.C. - The Charleston RiverDogs' offensive outburst came to a halt on Friday as they were shut out, 1-0, by the Rome Braves in the series finale, failing to capture the three-game sweep in front of a rowdy 5,652 at Riley Park.
Right-handed starter Jio Orozco dealt 5 2/3 scoreless frames with six strikeouts and no walks, leaving the 0-0 contest in the sixth. The Tucson, AZ native has thrown 9 2/3 innings without allowing a run in the RiverDogs' (38-37, 5-1) second half.
Reliever Braden Bristo (0-4) gave up the lone Rome (44-34, 4-5) run in the eighth. A Riley Delgado infield chopper snuck under first baseman Chris Hess' glove, scoring Drew Waters from second. Bristo fell to a misleading 0-4 with an impressive 1.50 ERA in 30 innings.
Shortstop Oswaldo Cabrera and SAL Player of the Week Pablo Olivares extended their hit streaks to 11 and 8 games, respectively. Cabrera can tie Leonardo Molina for the RiverDogs' team-high 12-game streak with a knock in his next game. Both Cabrera and Olivares finished the series with five hits, an RBI, and three runs.
Left fielder Mitchell Hansen made his Holy City debut, collecting a pair of hits in his first South Atlantic League contest. The 2015 second round selection of the Los Angeles Dodgers was signed to a Minor League contract on Tuesday.
Charleston's offense had been supreme in the first week of the second half, averaging 8.2 runs and 12.2 hits while racking up double-digit hits in each of the first six games. The RiverDogs had scored in the first or second innings of every second-half contest before Rome hung all zeroes on Friday.
The RiverDogs had their chances on Friday but went 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position. The Dogs also had two runners caught stealing and left the tying and winning runs stranded in the bottom of the ninth.
Ballpark Fun
Military Red Shirt Friday was capped off by a Home Telecom Postgame Fireworks show which was inspired by a fan vote. Riley Park goers could submit requests on social media for tracks to play in conjunction with the fireworks display. Fans could also save a dollar at the box office by wearing red shirts to honor the military.
Upcoming
Charleston starts a four-game series in Greenville at 7:05 on Saturday. Right-hander Miguel Yajure (2-0, 1.93) battles Drive righty Kutter Crawford (2-3, 2.96) in the series opener.
