Edmonton Oil Kings News Release

Edmonton, AB - The Edmonton Oil Kings got a thrilling 3-2 overtime win on Sunday afternoon at Rogers Place over the Regina Pats in their final game before their Holiday break.

The Oil Kings used a first period power play goal to hold a 1-0 lead over the Pats through 20 minutes of play.

Just before the midway mark of the period, Blake Fiddler found Nathan Pilling with a perfectly placed pass in the left-circle of the Regina zone that he scorched towards the net in tipped in off of Smyth Rebman for his second goal of the season.

The Pats did outshoot the Oil Kings 11-8 in the period, but Kolby Hay was rock solid stopping each Regina offering.

Early in the second period, the Oil Kings looked as if they'd increased their lead after Marshall Finnie cashed in on a rebound in front of the Regina net only to have the goal called off due to incidental goaltender interference.

The disallowed goal led to a momentum shift as the Pats scored two goals over the next two minutes with Jaxsin Vaughan and Borya Valis turning a one-goal deficit into a one-goal lead for the Pats less than four minutes into the second period.

With less than four minutes left in the period, the Oil Kings were able to get back to level footing on a milestone goal from Joe Iginla as in just his second career WHL game he scored his first career WHL goal after taking a pass from John Szabo on a two-on-one rush and ripping the puck passed Madden Mulawka.

In the third period, both teams would have their opportunities to pull in front but both Hay and Mulawka would shut the door at their respective ends.

In overtime, Hay came up with a handful more of big saves to keep the game going and then with 45 seconds left in the bonus period, Marshall Finnie broke in on a two-on-one and elected to keep and fire the puck into the top shelf for his first career overtime winner and 10th goal of the season.

Next up, the Oil Kings return from their Holiday break on December 27 as they kickoff a seven-game road trip in Prince George when they battle the Cougars at 8:00 P.M. MT. You can catch all the action on the Oil Kings Radio Network, iHeartRadio Canada.
