Spokane Chiefs News Release
Portland, Ore. - Spokane visited the Rose City on Saturday night for the second leg of a back-to-back home-and-home series with the Portland Winterhawks. Saturday's game marked the fourth game between the two teams since Thanksgiving, and the final game for both teams before the league-wide holiday break next week.
A quick start for the Chiefs earned a power play with Coco Armstrong getting sent to the ice. After Dawson Cowan made a huge shorthanded save, Conner Roulette would take the feed from Ty Cheveldayoff and finish off a break with a nifty backhand high into the net to make it 1-0 at 3:54 in the first.
Just one penalty and one goal in a quick first period with the Chiefs leading the shots 14-12 after one.
The second period picked up with end-to-end action. The Chiefs front line would pepper the net with Chase Bertholet finally clipping it home for Spokane's second goal of the night. Catton and Schoettler credited with the assists.
Portland would answer right back with a goal of their own off a rebound to bring the score to 2-1 in favor of Spokane.
Spokane would find the net again through Ekström but it was waved off due to goaltender interference from Ben Bonni. Portland thought they had an equalizer but it too was ruled no good because Cowan's net was off the mooring several seconds before the puck crossed the line.
Hayden Paupanekis added a third goal for the Chiefs after stealing the puck at the point and firing in off the goalie's right post. It was his sixth of the season and the teams would hit intermission with the score at 3-1. After two it was Spokane dominating the shot count with 37 shots on goal compared to just 19 for Portland.
The third period was physical with hits and scoring chances on both ends before ultimately finishing 3-1 in favor of Spokane.
Dawson Cowan was stellar in net all night, stopping 37 shots including 19 in the third period alone. Spokane dominated the shot count, totaling 49 shots with 24 in the second period.
The Chiefs were 1/3 on the power play and showed outstanding discipline in a tight contest, committing zero penalties on the night.
Spokane will head to the holiday break on a much-needed high note and will be back in action at home on Wednesday, December 27th for TicketsWest Player Magnet Giveaway.
