Brandon Wheat Kings News Release

Teddy Bear Toss night could hardly have started better for the Brandon Wheat Kings as they roared out of the gate and got the feel-good goal early. The end of the game, however, wasn't nearly as rosy.

Rylen Roersma, Carter Klippenstein, and Brett Hyland all scored and Carson Bjarnason made 27 saves but the Wheat Kings fell 4-3 to Moose Jaw. The final shots with 31-30 in favor of the Warriors.

"It was back and forth, and we've had pretty close games for the most part," said head coach and GM Marty Murray. "Tonight was another one, and unfortunately we didn't hang on to win or get it to the extra frame."

The always-anticipated Teddy Bear Toss goal came just 1:20 into the game as Roersma took a pass from Flamand off the cycle and picked his corner perfectly. The barrage of bears began, and the Wheat Kings and Warriors took a breather.

Moose Jaw countered quickly afterward, scoring a strange one as a cross-crease pass bounced in off a sprawling Wheat Kings defender. But Klippenstein had the answer for Brandon, as he broke in off the rush and sniped one short side.

Before the period was out, the score was tied as the Warriors crashed the crease with Martin Rysavy banging it home. A late save by Bjarnason preserved the 2-2 tie going into the intermission.

It wasn't long into the second before Moose Jaw had the lead for the first time, however. Just 19 seconds in, Dakota MacIntosh was left alone in front and managed to leak one through Bjarnason for the 3-2 advantage.

Early in the third, the Wheat Kings earned the tying goal Charlie Elick took a shot through traffic and Hyland alertly tipped it out of mid-air to tie the score at three apiece.

But it was the Warriors who had the last laugh. Brayden Schuurman drove the back post and took a feed from the right circle.
