Tri-City ValleyCats News Release
TROY, NY - Drew Ferguson finished 3-4 with two home runs, a double, two runs batted in, and three runs scored, as the Tri-City ValleyCats defeated the Vermont Lake Monsters 8-2 on Wednesday night to kick off a six-game homestand at Joseph L. Bruno Stadium.
After getting swept by the Connecticut Tigers in a three-game road set in a series that only saw them score a total of eight runs, the ValleyCats returned home in style, matching that three-game run total, and equaling the number of home runs they had hit the entire season entering the night.
The Lake Monsters actually were the first team of the night to enter the scoring column, when Vermont third baseman Trace Loehr hit a two-run double in the top of the second inning.
However, Ferguson got the scoring started for the 'Cats in the bottom of the third, hitting a 1-1 pitch from Vermont right-hander Jon Massad over the left field wall, and into the Tri-City bullpen for his first professional home run.
Two innings later, Ferguson came inches away from another home run, doubling of the top of the left field wall, advancing Bobby Wernes to third base, and leaving two 'Cats in scoring position for Keach Ballard. Lake Monsters right fielder Seth Brown then misplayed a foul ball off of the bat of Ballard, scoring Wernes from third, and tying the game at 2-2.
One batter later, Ferguson scored on a balk by Massad, then Brooks Marlow drove home Ballard with a sacrifice fly, giving Tri-City a 4-2 lead.
The 'Cats bats struck again in the bottom of the sixth inning, when Dexture McCall led off by drilling a solo home run of his own to left field. Then, with two outs and nobody aboard, Ferguson came up and hit his second home run of the day, once again over the left field wall.
Tri-City went on to score a third run in the frame when Johnny Sewald drove home Ballard with a two-out RBI double. The 'Cats then tacked on a final run in the bottom of the eighth, when Anthony Hermelyn drove home Sewald with a sacrifice fly.
Earning the win for the Tri-City was right-hander Dean Deetz, who allowed only one hit in 3.1 scoreless innings, while striking out three batters.
Tri-City and Vermont will return to "The Joe" on Thursday night for the second game in this three-game set. On the mound for the ValleyCats will be LHP Austin Nicely (0-0, 5.06), with RHP Heath Bowers (0-0, 3.00) getting the start for the Lake Monsters.
