Vermont Lake Monsters News Release
TROY, NY --- The Tri-City ValleyCats scored three unearned runs to take the lead in the bottom of the fifth inning and added three solo home runs in the contest to beat the Vermont Lake Monsters 8-2 in New York-Penn League action Wednesday night at Bruno Stadium.
Vermont had taken an early 2-0 lead in the second inning on a Trace Loehr two-out, two-run double that scored Seth Brown and Nick Collins, both making their Lake Monsters debuts. Brown, who finished 2-for-4, led off the inning with a single and advanced to third on Collins' one-out double. Reliever James Naile also made his Vermont debut, allowing a run on two hits in the eighth inning.
Drew Ferguson, who went 3-for-4 with three runs and a double, put the ValleyCats on the board in the third inning with the first of his two solo homers off of Vermont starter Jonnie Massad. Then trailing 2-1 in the fifth, Tri-City took advantage of three Lake Monster errors to score three unearned runs to take a 4-2 lead. The ValleyCats added three more runs in the sixth on a Dexture McCall solo homer, Ferguson's second home run and a Johnny Seawald RBI double.
Massad (1-1) allowed just one run on two hits over the first four innings, but was charged with the six runs (three earned) in the fifth and sixth to take the loss. Tri-City reliever Dean Deetz (1-1) allowed just one hit with two walks and three strikeouts over 3 1/3 scoreless innings to earn the victory. Seawald was 2-for-4 with a run to go along with his RBI double, while Keach Ballard scored a pair of runs.
The loss was the first in three road games this season for Vermont (4-8), which had swept a two-game series at Hudson Valley June 25-26. The Lake Monsters continue the series at Tri-City with single games on Thursday and Friday at 7:00 pm before heading to Connecticut for a three-game series over the holiday weekend.
