Lowell Spinners News Release
NORWICH, CT - After the best start in team history, with 10 wins in the month of June, it would seem logical that at some point, the Lowell Spinners would hit a few rough patches. Tonight, the team's defense let it down as the Connecticut Tigers took the first game of a home-and-home series, 5-2.
Connecticut (6-6) jumped out to an early lead as the first Tiger batter smacked a homerun over the right field wall off of Spinner starter Daniel Gonzalez (2-1, 2.57). The Tigers then added one more in the second on three straight singles and a sacrifice fly.
The game slipped away in the fifth as Jordon Austin dropped a fly ball in right that became a three-base error and after a single scored a run, Josh Ockimey couldn't contain a groundball which became a two-base error and led to Gonzalez leaving the game. Ben Taylor came in and promptly allowed a single and a sacrifice fly that closed the scoring for the Tigers.
Brandon Magee reached on an error in the eighth and was advanced to third on a single by Alex McKeon. Magee then scored on a balk and McKeon scored the second run for Lowell (10-3) after a Luis Alexander Basabe single and a groundout by Jeremy Rivera.
The Spinners did get the tying run to the plate in the ninth with nobody out, but three straight strikeouts ended the threat.
Gonzalez allowed five runs in four innings, but only two were earned. Taylor, after allowing two inherited runners to score, struck out five Tigers in two innings of relief before giving way to Randy Perez, who tossed two scoreless innings.
Basabe, who became the first Spinner in team history to homer from either side of the plate the night before in Vermont, led the team again with two hits.
Jake Cosart (0-0, 2.57) will be on the bump tomorrow night as Lowell returns for the second leg of this home-and-home series during Fireworks Night at LeLacheur Park. Gates open at 6 pm and first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
