-SPIKES BACK HOME TO FACE BLACK BEARS TONIGHT:The State College Spikes continue their 10th Season as they begin their first-ever series against the West Virginia Black Bears tonight at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. The Black Bears, who relocated from Jamestown after last season, will face the Spikes a total of 11 times this season. State College comes off of a 3-2 road trip through Mahoning Valley and Staten Island, including a two-game sweep of the Scrappers. Tonight's game is the first of a three-game homestand for the Spikes, with West Virginia providing the opposition all three nights. State College went 46-44 against the Jamestown Jammers from 2006-2014, including a 22-22 record at home.
-LAST GAME: Harrison Bader made his professional debut for the State College Spikes a memorable one, swatting two home runs, but the Spikes dropped a 5-3 decision to the Staten Island Yankees on Tuesday night at Richmond County Bank Ballpark. Bader, the St. Louis Cardinals' 2015 third-round draft choice out of the University of Florida, drilled a solo home run to left field in the third inning, then followed with a two-run shot to left in the fifth. The former Gator became just the second Spikes player to homer twice in his debut with the club, after Rowan Wick accomplished the feat on Opening Night last year. Four Spikes errors led to four Staten Island runs, which helped give the Yankees the win in the rubber match of a three-game set.
-McKINNEY MAKES THIRD START OF YEAR FOR SPIKES TONIGHT: Left-hander Ian McKinney makes the start on the mound tonight for State College. McKinney made a strong appearance on the mound on June 19, logging seven innings and allowing three runs in a quality start despite the loss. The Orlando, FL native then battled through 4 2/3 innings at home on June 24, allowing seven runs, five of them earned, but striking out seven batters. McKinney, the fifth-round draft choice of the Cardinals in 2013, made two starts for the Spikes last season, once during the season's opening week and another on July 29 before going down with an injury. In between, the lefty twice won Appalachian League Pitcher of the Week honors for Rookie-level Johnson City.
-AGRAZAL GETS MOUND CALL FOR BLACK BEARS: Right-hander Dario Agrazal will get the ball for West Virginia tonight. Agrazal earned his first win of 2015 this past Friday at Auburn by allowing one run on six hits and a walk over six innings of work. The Aguadulce, Panama native did not strike out any batters in the winning effort. Agrazal spent last season with the Rookie-level Gulf Coast League Pirates, going 3-4 with a 4.20 ERA over 12 starts. The righty struck out 34 batters and walked just five over 55 2/3 innings in the GCL. Agrazal posted a 32-to-17 strikeout-to-walk ratio along with a 6-0 record and a 2.40 ERA for the Dominican Summer League Pirates in 2013.
-BADER JOINS THE SPIKES IN A BIG: The Spikes welcomed Harrison Bader, the 2015 third-round draft choice of the St. Louis Cardinals, to the club two days ago, and the former University of Florida outfielder did not disappoint as he clubbed two home runs in his professional debut last night in Staten Island. Bader was named to the College World Series All-Tournament Team after hitting. 348 with two home runs and five RBI over four games in Omaha. He was also named an NCBWA third-team All-American this season after hitting 17 homers and driving in 66 runs over 67 games.
-SPIKE MARKS: Josh Swirchak collected his first professional base hit last night in Staten Island...Carson Cross and Greg Tomchick both made their professional debut on the mound last night...Ronnierd Garcia is fifth in the New York-Penn League with a .406 batting average...Garcia's .486 on-base percentage is tied for third-best in the loop as well...Landon Beck's 0.60 WHIP is third in the NYPL, and his .147 opponents batting average is fifth-best among NYPL starting pitchers...The Spikes will visit Monongalia County Ballpark to meet the Black Bears July 15-17.
