FC Cincinnati News Release
CINCINNATI - FC Cincinnati have acquired winger ÃÂlvaro Barreal (pronounced AL-vuh-roh bah-RAY-ahl) via transfer from Argentinian side Club Atlético Vélez Sarsfield using Allocation Money.
Barreal, 20, will occupy an international roster slot and be added to FC Cincinnati's 2020 roster upon the receipt of his International Transfer Certificate, P1 Visa and completion of any mandatory quarantine period under local government and MLS health and safety protocol.
"We are always seeking for interesting, good young talents in the national and international markets to strengthen our roster," General Manager Gerard Nijkamp said. "In our opinion, ÃÂlvaro Barreal is this type of potential talent who can compete within our squad and must now take the next step in his career at FC Cincinnati."
The winger has made 18 appearances, including two starts, with Vélez Sarsfield across all competitions since 2018. After coming up through the Vélez Sarsfield academy, Barreal made his professional debut in an Argentine Primera División match against Boca Juniors on Sept. 2, 2018. He recorded his first-ever professional goal against River Plate on Feb. 4, 2019.
He has represented Argentina's youth national team and competed with the U-20s in the 2018 COTIF tournament in Valencia, Spain. Barreal made five appearances, all starts, scoring two goals as Argentina went on to win the tournament.
FC Cincinnati will be back in action this evening, when the team plays Chicago Fire FC. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. ET, and the game will be televised on WSTR 64, carried on the radio on WDJO (99.5 FM, 107.9 FM and 1480 AM), streamed regionally on fccincinnati.com/stream, out of market on ESPN+, while an audio stream will be available at TuneIn (WDJO) and fccincinnati.com.
