July 8, 2022 - Major League Soccer (MLS)
FC Cincinnati News Release
FC Cincinnati have acquired forward Sergio Santos from Philadelphia Union, the club announced today. In return, FC Cincinnati sends $300,000 in 2022 General Allocation Money (GAM) to Philadelphia, with an additional $625,000 in conditional GAM if certain performance-based metrics or contract conditions are met. Philadelphia Union will receive a percentage of a future trade if Santos is traded to another club within MLS.
Santos, 27, joined Philadelphia in 2019 from Audax Italiano, of the Chilean Primera División. In 89 games for the Union across all competitions, Santos has scored 22 goals and registered 13 assists. He scored his first MLS hat trick against Toronto in 2020, and two weeks later he scored the goal which clinched the Supporter's Shield for the Union.
The Brazilian striker has scored one goal and added three assists in 11 appearances this season in Philadelphia. Per Statsbomb, Santos leads the league in open-play assists per 90 (0.41), and he ranks second with 0.74 xG+xA per 90, and 3.4 pressures in the attacking half per 90.
"Sergio is a player with game-changing pace and power," said FC Cincinnati General Manager Chris Albright. "He's a hardworking, versatile striker that can complement our current group. His character and familiarity with how we want to play makes him an ideal addition at this time and I'd like to welcome Sergio to Cincinnati."
Santos began his professional career in Chile, with Audax Italiano. In five seasons with Audax, Santos made 65 appearances, posting a tally of 20 goals and seven assists. At 24, he made the move to the states to join Philadelphia.
