Fresno Falcons News Release
FRESNO, Calif. â Fresno Falcons Head Coach and General Manager Blaine Moore solidified his roster Monday as he released five training camp invitees five days before the team opens its Taylor Cup defense in Bakersfield against the Condors on Oct. 12.
Players unable to crack the regular season roster include Marek Babic, Tom Levo, Stepan Sommer, Darryl Stettler and Joe Strangis. Moore's personnel decisions leave the Falcons with 20 players all of whom are under contract (a complete list follows). Among the players that will comprise Fresno's opening day roster are:
· 11 players from last year's Taylor Cup Championship team: Scott Borders, Brad Both, Kirk DeWaele, Joe Frederick, Terry Friesen, Mike Mathers, Cory Murphy, Kris Porter, Drew Schoneck, Alex Todd and Jason Weaver.
· 5 rookies, including Borders who was with the club during its Championship run. The others are Justin Barauskas, Austin de Luis, Colin Embley and Jordan Landry.
· 5 players who earned tryouts in the American Hockey League this pre-season: Borders, Both, Kevin Haupt (injured) and Murphy with the Utah Grizzlies and newcomer Steve Lowe with the Grand Rapids Griffins.
· 1 player, Friesen, who worked out with the NHL's San Jose Sharks during the pre-season.
· 18 players who have won championships at the high school, collegiate, major junior or professional levels.
· 7 players who were drafted by teams in the National Hockey League: DeWaele, Iain Fraser, Frederick, Friesen, Steve Lowe, Mathers and Murphy.
· 5 players who have represented their country in international competition: Fraser, Frederick, Schoneck, Kayle Short and Weaver.
The defending Taylor Cup Champions' home opener for the 2002-2003 campaign is on Oct. 18 in a Taylor Cup Finals re-match with the Idaho Steelheads.
