Springfield, Mass. - The Springfield Falcons (28-12-1-4) failed to earn any of a possible four points last week, falling in regulation to the Worcester Sharks Friday night and the Bridgeport Sound Tigers Saturday night. The losses extended the team's season-long winless streak to five games, but the Falcons still maintain the top spot in the Northeast Division and the best points percentage in the American Hockey League (.678).

Springfield holds the second highest point total (61) in the American Hockey League, six points behind the Manchester Monarchs with five games in hand on the Eastern Conference opponent. The Falcons remain on pace to set the best record in franchise history, previously held by the 2012-13 club that finished with 45 wins and a .651 points percentage to lead the Northeast Division. This year's team is on pace for 47 wins and 103 points.

Springfield looks to bounce back with four games this week, two at home and two on the road. The Falcons host the Albany Devils and the Syracuse Crunch Tuesday and Friday night, respectively, before traveling to Syracuse Saturday and to the Providence Bruins Sunday afternoon.

The Falcons were defeated by the Worcester Sharks Friday, January 31, falling behind just 1:15 into the game. Travis Oleksuk's early tally gave Worcester a 1-0 lead, and Springfield trailed for the remainder of the contest. Oleksuk and linemate Dan DaSilva each scored twice, while Yanni Gourde chipped in with three assists to lead the Sharks. Sean Collins and Lukas Sedlak found the back of the net for the Falcons, while goaltender Mike McKenna made 35 saves in a losing effort.

Springfield was unable to light the lamp versus Bridgeport Saturday night, falling for the fifth straight game. The Sound Tigers' Anders Lee and Scott Mayfield scored twice in a 16-second span at the end of the first period, and Mike Halmo netted the team's third goal at 7:12 of the final frame. Anders Nilsson stopped all 27 shots he faced in net for Bridgeport, earning his sixth win and second shutout of the season. It was only the third time this season Springfield has been blanked.

The Falcons occupy first place in the AHL's Northeast Division with a 28-12-1-4 record, having earned 61 of a possible 90 points. Springfield's .678 points percentage leads the entire American Hockey League and has the team on pace for the best record in the franchise's 20-year history. The 2012-13 Falcons posted 45 wins, 99 points and a .651 points percentage, while this year's club is on pace for 47 wins, 103 points and a .678 points percentage.


The Falcons have earned only one point in their last five games (0-4-0-1), coming in a shootout loss to the Portland Pirates January 26. Springfield has not won a game since the team's 4-1 rout of the Adirondack Phantoms January 20. Over the five-game skid, the team has been outscored 20-8.


The Falcons have two defensemen currently on recall with the Columbus Blue Jackets, the team's NHL affiliate. Cody Goloubef was recalled Saturday, January 25 and has played in three games with the parent club. Tim Erixon was recalled Sunday for the second time in a week. Erixon, who leads the Falcons with 20 assists, has appeared in two games with the Blue Jackets this season, totaling one shot, two penalty minutes and a +2 rating.


Falcons netminder Mike McKenna leads all American Hockey League goaltenders in save percentage (.934) and shootout wins (4), and ranks second in goals-against average (1.89). In 16 appearances (15 starts) this season, the St. Louis native has posted a 10-5-0 record with two shutouts, which came back-to-back November 23 versus Hartford and November 30 versus Portland.


The Falcons will hold a press conference Tuesday, February 4 at 5:30 p.m. to make a major announcement. Taking place in Meeting Room 2 on the convention center side of the MassMutual Center, the doors will open at 5:00 p.m., and the press conference is open to the media and the general public.

Heather O'Reilly, a three-time Olympic Gold Medalist with the United States Women's National soccer team, will sign autographs at the Falcons game March 22 versus the Manchester Monarchs. In addition to her Olympic success, O'Reilly also won two NCAA National Championships at the University of North Carolina, a WPS championship with SKY Blue FC, and a Bronze (2007) and Silver Medal (2011) at the World Cup.
