Fresno Loses to Bakersfield, 4-2
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - Kevin St. Jacques registered a goal and two assists as he helped lead the Bakersfield Condors to a 4-2 victory over the Fresno Falcons in front of a crowd of 4,761 at Centennial Garden.
Bakersfield jumped out to an early lead less than a minute into the hockey game. Fresno goaltender Brett Jaeger made an initial save on Paul Rosebush on a bid from the slot, but Brett Lutes cleaned up the rebound to give his club a 1-0 lead at :52. The Falcons tied the game when Dustin VanBallegooie forced a turnover behind the Condors net that landed right on the stick of Jason Weaver, who pounced for his fourth of the year at 17:51.
Bakersfield broke the deadlock at 6:44 of the second on the power play. A shot from the blueline never reached Jaeger and instead found former Falcon Brad Mehalko all alone in the slot, who went upstairs to give his club a 2-1 lead heading to the final period.
The Condors wrested away firm control of the game with a pair of goals 1:29 apart early in the third. The back-breaker and eventual game-winner was scored by St. Jacques, who finished a two-on-one with Connor James by beating Jaeger to the blocker side short-handed at 4:29 to give Bakersfield a two-goal lead. Todd Alexander then extended the lead to three at 5:58 to give the Condors a second insurance goal.
VanBallegooie would score his first professional goal at 7:21 to keep the Falcons within shouting distance as they peppered netminder Yutaka Fukufuji with 14 shots in the third. Fresno pulled no closer, though, falling by the final of 4-2.
The loss keeps the Falcons winless on the road this season at 0-4-0, and drops their overall mark to 6-9-1on the year. The club remains on the road for the final game of a three-game road trip on Saturday at Long Beach Arena against the Long Beach Ice Dogs. All of the play-by-play action can be heard live on 103.1 FM, The Mountain Cat, beginning at 6:50 p.m. with the pre-game show.
The Falcons' next home game is Tuesday, Dec. 7, when they host the East Division's Greenville Grrrowl at 7 p.m. at Save Mart Center. Tickets are now on sale for as low as $8 per seat and may be purchased directly at Save Mart Center's box office and all Ticketmaster outlets, by phone at 485-TIXS (8497) or online at www.ticketmaster.com.
