Falcons Host Special Afternoon at the Nest
March 27, 2011 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Springfield Falcons News Release
For the second time this month, the Springfield Falcons hosted a Sunday full of hockey, skating and family fun. The Falcons hosted the Binghamton Senators and it was an afternoon filled with activities including a special sled hockey prelim game that featured the Western MA Knights against Hampden Savings Bank. The special sled hockey game was used as a fundraiser for the Alex Camerlin family of East Longmeadow. Alex passed away a year ago and Sunday's game was played in his honor with the presentation of the second annual "Cammer Cup."
"This is a special day because Alex was a special person and we are so thrilled to have his family here and enjoying the day with us," said Carole Appleton, manager of the Amelia Ice Arena in Westfield, MA and organizer of the event. "I also want to thank Dave Petruzzelli of Hampden Bank for all of their support. This was a great day and everyone had a memorable time."
The Knights were able to pull out a 3-2 win and skate away with the "Cammer Cup" this year. Falcons forward Mike Blunden served as an honorary coach for the Knights in the game. Blunden along with several of his teammates spent some time with the kids from both the Knights and Springfield Sliders teams before the game helping bring some joy to the youngsters on the afternoon. Steven Goertzen attended some of the Sliders and Knights practices this year getting in the sled during the season.
The Western Mass Knights is in their first year of competition. Players age in range from 18 to 55. The Knights will participate in the New England Invitational Sled Hockey tournament to be held at Amelia Park from April 16 to 18.
Following the Falcons game, families once again were invited to skate on the MassMutual Center ice and get a feel of what it's like to skate on the same ice as their favorite pros. Roughly 100 fans stayed for the post-game skate and individuals who stayed were able to receive autographs from Falcons players who appeared on the bench after the game to check out the festivities.
The Falcons concluded their season series with the Senators on Sunday and dropped a 4-1 decision with David Savard scoring for the Falcons. Savard has one goal and two assists in his last two games and he leads all Falcons defensemen in scoring this year with eight goals and 25 assists for 33 points in 66 games.
Rookie goaltender Paul Dainton started his third straight game on Sunday and stopped 26 of the 29 shots he faced. The Falcons have four home games remaining starting next weekend when they host the Bridgeport Sound Tigers on Friday and Connecticut Whale on Saturday. Tickets are available at the MassMutual Center Box Office in downtown Springfield.
