Falcons Fall in Victoria 6-3

Victoria, British Columbia - The Fresno Falcons saw their three-game winning streak come to an end on Thursday night as they fell to the Victoria Salmon Kings 6-3 at Save-on-Foods Memorial Centre.

Victoria scored a pair of goals in the opening 7:35 of play to take a 2-0 lead into the first intermission. Gustav Engman opened the scoring at 4:06, beating Ryan MacDonald with a shot from the blue line for a power play goal.

Milan Gajic added to the lead at 7:35. Gajic gathered in a loose puck at his own blue line, and skated into the Fresno end on a 3-on-1 rush, finishing the play with a wrist shot from just inside the right-wing circle for his fourth goal of the season.

The Salmon Kings added to their lead in the second period, scoring three goals on just six shots. Kiel McLeod extended the lead to 3-0 at 4:28 as he took a pass from Wes Goldie and got free on the left-wing side, beating MacDonald with a shot to the blocker pad side for his sixth goal of the season.

Seamus Young scored his second of the season at 8:05, one-timing a shot from the left-wing circle, and McLeod added his second of the period at 16:49 on a power play giving the Salmon Kings a 5-0 lead through 40 minutes.

The Falcons ended Julian Ellis' shutout bid 6:27 into the third period, scoring their seventh shorthanded goal in just eight games this season. Tyler Kindle skated into the right-wing circle and beat Ellis with a wrist shot to the glove side.

But, the Salmon Kings got the goal right back just 29 seconds later as Greg Hornby rushed into the Fresno end and tucked a shot past Scott Stirling, who replaced McDonald at the start of the period, for his first goal of the season.

Fresno then scored on both ends of a 5-on-3 power play to pull within 6-3. Cory Murphy scored both of the goals just 17 seconds apart.

The Falcons and Salmon Kings play the second game of their three-game series on Saturday with face-off set for 7:05 p.m. The game airs live on the Internet at www.fresnofalcons.com at 6:55 p.m., and will air on 1550 Sporting News Radio on a tape-delay basis following Fresno City College football.
