Fresno Falcons News Release
FRESNO, Calif. â The Fresno Falcons blew open a one-goal hockey game heading into the third period by scoring five straight goals in less than a 10 minute span of the final frame to defeat the Anchorage Aces, 11-6, on Friday at Selland Arena in front of a crowd of 5,083.
Anchorage took the initial lead, 1-0, 17:21 into the first period on Yvan Corbin's first of four goals on the evening. Falcons rookie Jordan Landry then scored his first goal as a professional with less than a minute to go in the frame to knot the game at one heading to the second.
For the second time this season the Falcons and Aces combined for a nine-goal second period at Selland Arena, duplicating the feat they jointly accomplished during a game on Jan. 12. Corbin scored goals two and three just over a minute apart to give Anchorage a 3-1 lead at 6:50. Fresno responded by pouring in four straight off the sticks of Mike Barrie, Kris Porter, Scott Borders and Jason Weaver to take a two-goal lead of their own, 5-3. The Aces' Paul Williams and the Falcons' Cory Murphy would then trade goals 27 seconds apart before Corbin ripped a slapshot past Fresno netminder Mark Gowan at 16:26 of the second to complete the nine-goal onslaught. When the dust cleared, the Falcons carried a slim 6-5 lead to the third.
The contest was still a one-goal game until Fresno's Glen Gulutzan scored off a short-handed break-away to give his club a 7-5 advantage at 5:55. The Falcons then kept coming in waves, scoring four more times in less than 10 minutes as Drew Schoneck, Murphy, Brad Both and Ryan Duthie all tallied to open up an 11-5 lead. Jason Modopoulos of the Aces found the back of the net with less than a minute to go for the final 11-6 margin.
With two goals, Murphy was the only Falcon to score more than once. Ten different Falcons scored goals and 13 of 15 skaters that suited up recorded at least one point. The 11 goals establish a new league season-high, besting the nine-goals Fresno hung on Anchorage during the teams' last meeting, a 9-2 Falcons win on Jan. 25.
The victory pulls Fresno to within two points of the third-place San Diego Gulls at 25-16-5 and 55 points. The Falcons and Gulls clash in San Diego on Saturday night for the third time this week after splitting two games in Fresno on Tuesday and Wednesday. The game can be heard live on 103.1 FM, The Mountain Cat, beginning at 6:50 p.m. with the Mail Boxes, Etc. Pre-game Show.
