Alaska Aces News Release

FRESNO, California – Fresno scored ten goals over the final 32 minutes, overcoming a 3-1 deficit and walloping Anchorage by a score of 11-6 Friday night before a crowd of 5,083 at Selland Arena.

The game started out as a tight defensive battle, with Anchorage grabbing the lead as Dean Larson found Yvan Corbin with 2:39 remaining in the first period, marking the fifth consecutive contest that Corbin had found the back of the net. But with 36 seconds left, Fresno took advantage of an Aces' turnover when Jordan Landry whistled a drive past Anchorage starter Christian Soucy to tie the game 1-1.

Corbin scored twice in a 65-second span to open the second period. His power play goal at 6:50 completed a personal hat trick and gave the Aces a two-goal spread, one that quickly evaporated as the Falcons exploded for four goals in a period of less than five minutes. Mike Barrie, Kris Porter, Scott Borders, and Jason Weaver turned a 3-1 deficit into a 5-3 lead midway through the middle frame. 32 seconds after Weaver's goal, Paul Williams edged Anchorage to within a goal, but 27 seconds after that, Cory Murphy snapped a wrist shot that drove Soucy from the game with the Aces trailing 6-4. Soucy finished with 17 saves on 23 shots in 34 minutes of action. Corbin's fourth of the game, from an implausible angle along the right half-boards, trimmed the gap to 6-5 entering the final period.

Fresno greeted Soucy's replacement, Ryan Person, with five goals on 11 shots to begin the third period, effectively putting the game out of reach. Glen Gulutzan provided the turning point when he found himself all alone at center ice with Anchorage on a power play in an attempt to tie the game. He converted the ensuing breakaway at 5:55 to push the lead to 7-5, and Drew Schoneck, Murphy, Brad Both, and Ryan Duthie tacked on four more goals in the next ten minutes to turn the game into a rout. Jason Modopoulos registered his first goal in an Anchorage uniform on a deflection with 31.8 seconds left, accounting for the game's final score and giving him his first goal since the 2000-01 campaign. Corbin now leads the WCHL with 30 goals, while Dean Larson finished with four assists and shares the overall scoring lead with linemate Corbin at 58 points. Person completed his 26 minutes of work with 19 saves on 24 shots as Anchorage was outshot 47-28.

The Aces (12-34-2) continue their 12-day road trip tomorrow night in Long Beach at 6:00 p.m. AST. Anchorage has just one win in eight games against the Ice Dogs this season. All games are broadcast live on KFQD 750 AM, with Jack Michaels calling the play-by-play. Coverage begins 20 minutes prior to the opening face-off, presented by GCI.
