Condors Beat Gulls, 4-3 in Shootout

SAN DIEGO -- Someone once said that maybe the toughest home game is the first one coming off a long road trip. The San Diego Gulls just finished a six-game trek and were caught flat-footed by the Bakersfield Condors Friday night.
San Diego didn't really get going until midway through the third period, and muscled its way to the shootout. But in the overtime period, the Condors prevailed, winning the game 4-3. Bakersfield now jumps one point ahead of the Gulls for second place in the West Coast Hockey League.
Teams traded goals in the first period. Bakersfield (25-14-8) drew first blood at 9:49 on Jamie Cooke's 20th goal. Cooke took a pass from Shawn Byram, skated to the right circle and roofed a slap shot over the shoulder of Trevor Koenig. San Diego (27-14-3) tied it at 18:02 on Mark Pederson's team-leading 22nd tally.
Jamie Black skated behind the net and fed Dean Tiltgen, whose wrist shot from the slot was saved by Kevin St. Pierre. Pederson, however, picked up the rebound and backhanded it home.
The Condors took advantage of a Gulls turnover and went ahead, 2-1, at the 12:53 marker of the second period. Koenig ventured out of the crease to clear the puck, but it was stolen. Jeff Goldie, standing along the half boards, grabbed the puck and had an empty net staring him right in the face. It was Goldie's 17th goal on the year.
San Diego had a golden opportunity earlier in the period with a two-man advantage for 1:34. Guy Dupuis was already in the box for high-sticking when Steve Martinson caught Jonathan Sorg with an illegal stick. The Gulls had a few chances on the ensuing five-on-three power play, but a rock-steady St. Pierre kept the Blue and Orange at bay.
Paul Willett gave the Condors some insurance with breakaway goal - his 18th - 4:02 into the third. Nate Anderson threaded a pass behind the San Diego defense to an open Willett, who skated in and beat Koenig to the backhand.
Willett's tally proved to loom large because the Gulls scored two late goals to tie the game, 3-3. Mike McGhan pulled San Diego to within one at 13:19. Ashlee Langdone whipped a pass to a streaking McGhan, who potted his fourth goal. Pederson evened it with 2:05 remaining, banking a shot off St. Pierre into the net.
It took six rounds in the shootout period before the Condors were able to distinguish the Gulls. Goldie, Willett and Quinn Fair beat Koenig in the extra frame. Sylvain Deschatelets and Dean Tiltgen tallied for the Blue and Orange.
Notes: San Diego has won 11 of its last 14 at home... Koenig still needs seven more wins for 100 in his Gulls career... Kevin Grant missed his second straight game with an eye injury... Samy Nasreddine missed his fifth straight game with an injured back... Dennis Purdie remains on injured reserve... Mike Garrow remains with the American Hockey League's Utah Grizzlies... Marc Busenburg and Rob Voltera remain with the AHL's Hershey Bears...
The Gulls continue their homestand Saturday against Fresno at 7 p.m. Wall clocks, courtesy of Woodfin Suite Hotels, will be given to the first 5,000 fans Saturday.
